As transcenDANCE looks back at our beginnings, we connect to the tree imagery of our roots, our strong foundation, and the dreams that have manifested from our collective work. Our creative community nourishes us, allows us a space for healing, and supports us in our flourishing. Almost 20 years ago, transcenDANCE was co-founded by 12 teens and 2 adults who sat under a tree at Hoover High School. Rooted in our strong bonds and love of dance, we dreamed of what transcenDANCE could be for ourselves, each other, and our community. As we reflect on this origin story, we have invited our current CREATE students to explore what grounds them, what nourishes them, and what dreams they want to bring to life. Join the annual search to observe birds during this year's Great Backyard Bird Count, February 14-17. Library staff will be at the park on Sunday from 9:30 a.m. - 1 p.m. with a Naturalist from SD Bird Alliance (formerly San Diego Audubon Society) to coordinate bird viewing and help you learn to identify birds. Bird identification books and taxidermy specimens will be available for participants to view and Library staff will be there to assist with using bird identification apps. SD Bird Alliance will provide a scope that participants can use to get better views of birds. Grand Caribe is loved by birds because of the native plants. SD Bird Alliance has been hard at work replanting the park with natives and you can help us plant some more at this event! Bring sunscreen, a smartphone, water, and your love for birds! On Sunday, February 16, 2025 mycophiles, educators, chefs, supportive businesses and dedicated mushroom amateurs, enthusiasts and professionals will gather at our Annual Fungus Fair in San Diego’s Balboa Park, continuing our mission to help educate our community, exchanging knowledge and celebrating all things fungi. The San Diego Mycological Society was established in 1997 and our group gathers for the many facets of fungi such as culinary, cultivation, identification, photography and art, ecology and more. We have monthly seminars, conduct classes, lead forays to find mushrooms, assist in mushroom identification, and share joy in commensality at member potlucks and chef prepared full course mushroom dinners.
