This poetry workshop explores how writing can serve as a powerful tool for self-reflection, growth, expression, and comfort. Through examples of original work, participants will see how poetry can help navigate challenges, capture emotions, gain clarity, and express joy. The first 45 minutes will focus on understanding the impact of poetry and its connection to personal experiences. Participants will then have 45 minutes to write, using prompts designed to inspire creativity and self-expression. The session will conclude with an opportunity to share work, offer constructive feedback, and engage in a collaborative critique to support growth as poets and individuals. Western art has never experienced such magnificent examinations of what it is to be human. Rembrandt’s portraits present compelling, sentient beings, who think … feel … remember. In these lectures, we always speak of the role of art within its given society, but with Rembrandt’s evocations of a human’s inner life and of the tragedy of life, art becomes universal, transcending boundaries and borders, time and place. About Linda Blair: Linda Blair has taught art history for many years, at the La Jolla Athenaeum and UC San Diego Osher; she was a docent at The Cloisters. She holds a BA from Mills College and an MA from USD. She is an active volunteer at UC San Diego, dedicated to raising scholarship funds. In recent years, there has been a growing movement for the recognition and inclusion of Afro- Argentines in the national narrative. Activists, scholars and Afro-Argentine organizations have been working to raise awareness about the African contributions to Argentine society, challenge racism and promote equal rights. Efforts have also been made to document and preserve Afro-Argentine history and culture, as well as to promote representation in media, politics and other spheres. In this talk, Gaby Messina reflects on the current conditions of Afro visibility based on her own personal experience as an artist. She is a visual artist from Argentina whose work extends over two decades. She is the author of several books of photography and short films. Her work has been exhibited in numerous museums and galleries around the world. Her main areas of interest are visual representations of the African diaspora in Latin America with a focus on Afro-Argentines and their descendants.
