She is writing a book titled Japanese American Citizens as Survivors of the Hiroshima Atomic Bombing (Routledge, forthcoming). This book tells the story of young American citizens of Japanese ancestry who were in Hiroshima during World War II and their efforts to survive the atomic bomb, make their way back to the United States, build a life on the painful memories of their past, start a social movement to obtain medical relief from both the Japanese and American governments, and contribute to the peace movement for a world without nuclear weapons. Her presentation will discuss the challenges she has faced in the writing process.

Anna Ballew A Missoula Montana native, Anna Ballew entered the San Diego music scene in 2021, incorporating jazz-guitar stylings and soulful vocals to pop R&B hits, modern classics and original songs. Her formal entrance to music started with classical violin at age four, then transitioned to bluegrass fiddle at the age of eleven. This ignited her love of free-form and collaborative musical spaces. After hearing her father jam to folk-americana artists like Jackson Browne and James Taylor as a kid, she decided to pick up guitar and try out singing for family and friends at dinner parties in high school. From hometown performances and acapella groups in college to moving to California and becoming a full-time musician, Anna has swiftly moved through stages of a musical journey. Now modeling her sound around artists like Amy Winehouse, Ella Fitzgerald and Lake Street Dive, Anna is working on her first EP to be released in the next year, and can be found performing around at local restaurants and live music venues in Southern California. Printmaking has a long history as a tool for raising awareness about social issues and inspiring others to action. During this 2.5-hour workshop session, participants will be encouraged to experiment with simple printmaking techniques to create a print that raises awareness and expresses a personal statement about what they care about most. Get inspired as we creatively engage together! Desiree will share examples of how artists combine activism and printmaking to invite others to engage in social justice topics. Participants will be able to take home a finished artwork. Desiree Aspiras (she/her) is an educator, therapist, and printmaker in San Diego who deeply values how art can transform us and connect us to meaning. Her printmaking and book arts projects have been exhibited in spaces in San Diego, including the Athenaeum Art Center. She is the founder of Printmakers Against Racism, a project she started which engages printmakers across the world to make and sell prints and donate their proceeds to support racial justice. She is also a mindfulness facilitator and founder of Deep Breath Network, where she hopes to create diverse and welcoming spaces to share contemplative practices to support personal and social transformation with change-makers here in San Diego and beyond. She currently teaches at University of San Diego and Bastyr University California.
