The Lipinsky Family San Diego Jewish Arts Festival JFEST returns even stronger with new partnerships and venues that go from Balboa Park to Downtown, to La Jolla, Encinitas, and Carlsbad, reaching different corners of the county through great artistic programming. The 2023 edition will run from Thursday, June 1 until Sunday, July 16 celebrating three consecutive decades of performances that explore Jewish history, people, and ideas across San Diego with a wonderful schedule that will include virtuoso music, theatre, dance, and fine arts featuring the return of favorites like Grammy-nominated singer and touring band member with the legendary songwriter Leonard Cohen, Perla Batalla in House of Cohen: The Songs of Leonard Cohen and the return of the original theatrical piece Women of Valor, honoring six incredible women and how they have inspired the community. JFEST will also feature a special one-show-only reunion concert of the musical Witnesses, a moving production inspired by the diaries of 5 teenagers who died in the Holocaust. Recognized this year by the San Diego Theatre Critics Circle as “Outstanding New Production” happening at the Lawrence Family JCC in La Jolla. Continuing with the theatrical line-up, "Hereville" playing at The Old Globe and New Village Arts involves a time-traveling, monster fighting orthodox Jewish girl. Theatre Dybbuk: "The Merchant of Venice" (Annotated), or "In Sooth I Know Not Why I Am So Sad" is a play from sixteenth century England that touches on how antisemitism and other prejudicial beliefs operate in our world today, to be performed at the Lawrence Family JCC in La Jolla. The Congregation Adat Yeshurun, La Jolla will host the Festival Keynote: Judaism and Art with one of the world’s preeminent Jewish thinker and educator Rabbi Meir Soloveichik. In the musical section of JFEST, Jewish music takes on the flavor of cultures from Spain, Persia, Portugal, Romania, and many more in the 22nd Klezmer Summit: The World of Jewish Music happening at The First Universalist Unitarian Church of San Diego. “Neshama” – Music of the Soul, the community-wide musical concert that celebrates the deep connection of us all and Yale Strom’s "RECORDIALLY YOURS, LOU CURTISS, with a pre-show presentation on Jews and Folk Music at Digital Gym CINEMA, Park & Market, San Diego.

Events Listed Below: Men’s Pelvic Health and Wellness - June 1 (virtual) Learn about the pelvic floor for men, symptoms of pelvic floor dysfunction, how to address them and when to seek professional help. The pelvic floor is a combination of muscles, ligaments and connective tissues that support the pelvic organs. Learn about the anatomy, function and roles of the pelvic floor muscles as they relate to urinary control, bladder and bowel function, and sexual health and wellness. Nutrition and Fitness Beyond Cancer Treatment - June 6 (virtual) Learn about foods to include in your diet that decrease the risk of cancer recurrence or second primary cancers, improve energy levels and lower the risk of chronic diseases. Discover which foods have the greatest benefits and why, and how to incorporate them in a healthy lifestyle. Nutrition and Fitness During Cancer Treatment - June 20 (virtual) Learn about food flexibility for optimal nutrition prior to and during cancer treatment, as well as signs and symptoms related to treatment. Attendees will learn about optimal hydration and nutrition, including the importance of adequate protein and calories. Healthy Bones Exercise Class - Multiple dates and locations in June This exercise program includes exercises that target the body’s larger muscle groups to improve strength, balance and flexibility. Minimize bone loss and promote bone health by utilizing weights, bands and yoga postures. The program is designed to build stronger bones, improve balance and promote functional strength and fitness. This class takes place on the campus of Scripps Mercy Hospital San Diego at the Woltman Family College Building in Hillcrest. Exercise for Lymphedema - Multiple dates and locations in June Therapeutic exercises are known to help relieve swelling and pain caused by lymphedema. This weekly exercise class is led by experts from Scripps Shiley Fitness Center who teach proper exercise techniques to alleviate swelling and reduce discomfort. The 45-minute exercise class utilizes a combination of seated, standing and floor exercises. Modifications and variations will be offered to accommodate all levels of fitness and conditioning. Medical clearance and advanced notice are required to participate in the class. Cancer Support Groups Whether you or a loved one has cancer or you’re caring for someone who does, it helps to connect with others who are going through similar experiences. About Elliott Hundley Known for his dense multimedia compositions that reference both art history and mythology, Hundley’s work weaves together scenes from the past with familiar imagery taken from the contemporary world. Working in a variety of media Hundley fuses painting, drawing, sculpture, collage, photography, and performance into rich, multifaceted tableaux. Through a process ranging from gradual accumulation to spontaneous mark making, he builds up the surface of his works using quotidian found materials. Individual additions of embroidery, thread, straight pins, ephemera, magazine cut-outs, photographs, and paint come together to form complex compositions that at first glance appear unified but on closer inspection reveal their intricate and dexterously crafted components. About the Russell Lecture The Russell Foundation was established in the will of Betty Russell, one of MCASD's founding docents and a long-time supporter of UC San Diego. She specified that funds from the foundation should help "foster the appreciation and study of the modern visual arts and creativity of young artists" through support for the Museum and the University.
