  • Please join Helix Instrumental Music Association as we celebrate 32 years of supporting the Helix Instrumental Music Program at Helix Charter High School. Upon your arrival at the beautiful Thursday Club in picturesque Point Loma, you and your guests will be treated to lively Dixieland music and complimentary cocktails from our open bar. You will have the opportunity to peruse our silent auction items, as you indulge in hand-passed hors d'oeuvres. You can visit our photo booth and strike a pose with a variety of fun props, followed by a buffet dinner and scrumptious desserts. The festivities will continue with a performance by our Helix Bagpipe band, and our emcee will keep the night moving with our roller derby (a must-see!) and our live auction. The night will wrap up with a poignant photo presentation featuring our students, and some words from the music directors. It is a night not to be missed! Music in our schools is vitally important to the development of young leaders. The award-winning Helix Instrumental Music Program includes approximately 150 students in seven different ensembles. Proceeds from this event provide repair and maintenance of instruments, outside professional instruction, transportation, performance opportunities, and scholarship funds. • Workshop 10:30 a.m. - 11:45 a.m. Art and science intersect with elin o’Hara slavick’s art that maps radioactive residuum and Dr. David Richardson’s epidemiological studies of radiation’s human impact. O’Hara slavick, who wrote “Bomb After Bomb: A Violent Cartography” and “After Hiroshima,” is an internationally exhibiting artist who captures the lingering effects of radiation with autoradiographs and creates contact prints of rubbings of trees and architecture exposed to atomic bombs in Hiroshima, Nagasaki and Fukushima. Richardson, an epidemiologist who has conducted studies of cancer among U.S. federal nuclear workers and Japanese survivors of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, is the lead writer on the United Nations Committee on Epidemiological Studies of Radiation and Cancer (UNSCEAR). The duo is visiting from UC Irvine, where o’Hara slavick was artist in residence at the College of Health Sciences for the past three years and Richardson is associate dean for research in public health and a professor of environmental and occupational health. In this dynamic presentation, the artist and scientist discuss how they align their practices within the past, present and future of our shared nuclear realities.
