Every Monday at Noon Free concerts at Noon every Monday year-round . . . no wonder the Mini-Concerts are the longest-running and one of the most popular classical music series at the library! This series was founded by Glenna Hazleton in 1970 at the Athenaeum, and has been going strong ever since. The concerts feature both local and touring musicians, prize-winning students, university music faculty members, local chamber ensembles . . . and the repertoire also includes jazz, folk, and world music. There are no reservations, no tickets . . . just line up at the side door of the Athenaeum before Noon. (Donations are always welcome!) Built for the 1935 California Pacific International Exposition, a complex of now 32 single-story cottages, known as the House of Pacific Relations International Cottages, occupies an area of under two acres. The variety of cultures represented is matched by an equally diverse floral landscape from around the world. While the charming buildings draw most visitors’ attention, it’s worth taking a closer look at the rich variety of trees and other flora. Forever Balboa Park offers thematic park tours that focus on the park’s unique biodiversity and highlight the park’s horticultural wonders on the second Saturday of each month. Led by park volunteer and horticultural enthusiast Bill Edwards, the free tours leave from the Visitors Center at 10 a.m. unless otherwise indicated. Walks last 1.5 to 2 hours and are typically less than 1 mile on level terrain. It is advised that potential attendees contact the Balboa Park Visitors Center prior to the scheduled walk to determine if there are any last-minute changes or cancellations to the tours. Maestro Mikan Zlatkovich returns to Golden Island Dim Sum & Asian Cuisine for the 159TH session of Dim Sum & Jazz! INSTRUMENTAL NIGHT! About Mikan Zlatkovich Born a musical prodigy in former Yugoslavia, Mikan started his professional jazz career as a teenager whose immense talent was quickly recognised by top musicians, the audiences and music critics alike. Throughout the '80s he remained a major feature on the thriving Yugoslav jazz scene. In the early '90s, however, he decided to pursue bigger musical challenges, at first in New York, and ten years later in San Diego, where he regularly shares the stage with the likes of Gilbert Castellanos, Charles McPherson, Allison Adams-Tucker, Chuck McPherson, Bob Magnusson, Rob Thorsen, Jamie Shadowlight, and many other notable performers. On piano or synthesizer, Mikan's fiery performances continue to thrill and excite his audiences. He connects jazz fans in many different settings, from concert halls to small clubs to street corners. His musical chemistry and his remarkable skills captivate and welcome his audience into his music, offering an exciting and memorable jazz experience. No two performances can ever be the same. David Bazan's multi-part memoirs have blurred memories of his adolescence, but with the goal of being honest and accountable. NPR Music critic Ann Powers sees connections between Pedro the Lion's Santa Cruz and Jane Schoenbrun’s new film, I Saw the TV Glow.

When asked what he’d play for First Sunday Concerts he said, “Personally I’d love to do a program of early jazz and ragtime. I’ve worked up a lot of Jelly Roll Morton music on piano and guitar, as well as music from guitarists like Johnny St. Cyr and composers like Scott Joplin. Some of the Jelly Roll Morton tunes I play were composed while he lived and worked in Tijuana/San Diego in the early 20th century, so there’s a lot of fun history to share with that music.” A fifth-generation Kentuckian, Clinton Davis grew up in rural Carroll County. His repertoire spans fiddle and banjo music native to his family home, the exuberant ragtime piano and guitar of early 20th-century New Orleans and ballad songs and dance music of the Southwest. Davis’ prowess across instruments and traditional American styles has gained notice from the standard-bearers of previous generations and earned him a place amongst a new generation of American folk musicians. He has worked closely with roots guitar legends Jim Kweskin and Stefan Grossman, and is an official artist for Deering Banjos. In 2022, Davis received the commission of Kentucky Colonel in recognition of his work as a performer and educator. Europa Clipper will make a six-year journey to Jupiter to study Europa, an icy-surfaced moon that scientists believe has “ingredients for life.”

Based out of sunny San Diego, Gypsy Sally is a three piece blues band that brings the old school feel to the new age from blues, to rock with the occasional Bossa and Latin twist. Front man Kyler Jakubowski has utilized his North Carolina roots and over the years has created a very unique blues sound not heard since the 50’s, Austin Wagner links the rhythm and melody with his smooth motown influenced James Jameson style, and Martin Quezada holds the beat on drums with his Caribbean swing, all of which when brought together creates what is now known as the one and only Gypsy Sally. To date, Gypsy Sally has recorded one album, "How Long," recorded live in the studio with Alan Sanderson. Gypsy Sally is named after a bar in the song "Tecumseh Valley" by Townes Van Zandt. Apart from Van Zandt, the band is influenced by classic blues artists like B.B. King, John Lee Hooker, and Peter Green. However, in addition to the blues, the band also draws influence from the vocals of Sam Cooke, and the rock guitar of Rory Gallagher.
