Thursday, April 18 — 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Learn the easiest way to paint beautiful florals and garden friends using the simple technique of brushstroke painting! It all comes down to exactly how to load your brush and then apply that to your surface. I will show you how to get that opaque look using a series of basic strokes that you build up together to get one cohesive look. In this class, you will learn how to use a round brush for every stroke to create pansies and a dragonfly. We will practice on my special reusable worksheets, and then move on to our project surface of a wooden Easter egg that you can display to showcase your work! Megan Nguyen started taking classical piano lessons at the age of 6, and hasn't stepped away from the keys since! She discovered her love for singing early on, and later started gigging, writing, and teaching while attending college at UCSD. Her music style is a mixture of pop, soul, with classical and jazz influences. Megan has been a piano and voice teacher since 2015, specializing in classical performance and theory. She teaches through her private studio and is a member of the Music Teachers Association of California. She is also an instructor at Kalabash School of Music and Arts, Musikey, and Coronado Arts Academy. Jean-Paul (JP) Balmat is the award-winning educator and performer leading the internationally recognized music program at Mission Bay. His award-winning groups have been invited to perform throughout California, New Orleans and most recently Japan. Jean-Paul is an accomplished educator, performer, composer and arranger. As a professional saxophonist, he performs regularly in San Diego. He is artistic director of the Euphoria Brass Band and his recordings and compositions have been nominated for San Diego Music Awards the past six years. In 2019 and 2020 Euphoria Brass Band won the San Diego Music Award for “Best Jazz.” Most recently he has performed with New Orleans trombonist Delfeayo Marsalis, drummer Marvin “Smitty” Smith (Tonight Show Band) and GRAMMY award winning and nominated musicians Oscar Hernandez, Francisco Torres (Poncho Sanchez, Gordon Goodwin) and Javier Cabanillas (Pacific Mambo Orchestra, Cabanijazz Project). In "AS THE SUN WOUNDS THE SHADOWS," Nathan Storey presents various bodies of work, such as "Traces and Stains," that propose printed matter as a facilitator, witness, and residue of gay desire. Storey's artistic practice explores the intricate relationship between printed materials and queer memory, collectivity, liberation, and loss. Sarah Stieber presents the 4th annual Sarah Stieber Gallery in Little Italy, unveiling her latest collection titled the "Integration Series." The experiential pop-up gallery will be open to the public from April 8 – June 17, with a grand opening celebration taking place on April 18. The figurative series explores multifaceted identities, illustrated by the illusion of overlapping transparent colors made entirely from cut and pasted tape. Known for integrating her art with the public through large-scale murals and immersive events, this year’s gallery concept is no exception. When visitors enter the gallery, they will feel like they are stepping into one of Stieber’s colorful, sparkling paintings and can engage with a host of experiential features. Visitors can step into a custom Polaroid photo ‘art booth’ adorned with colored transparencies to snap Polaroids of themselves, creating instant self-portraits in Stieber’s signature style and becoming part of the art themselves. In a special collaboration with Topo Chico Mineral Water, the brand will introduce "Sabores," their newest line of flavored sparkling waters, at the gallery in weekly "Sabores Saturdays" events. This public event series will feature live music, allowing visitors to sample the new flavors in a festive atmosphere.
