For more than six decades, The Beach Boys’ music has been an indelible part of American history. Their brilliant harmonies conveyed simple truths through sophisticated, pioneering musical arrangements. The Beach Boys transcended their music and have come to represent Californian culture. They provided fans around the world with a passport to experience love, youthful exuberance, and surf culture. Founded in Hawthorne, California in 1961, The Beach Boys were originally comprised of the three teenaged Wilson brothers: Brian, Carl, and Dennis, their cousin Mike Love, and school friend Al Jardine. The Beach Boys signed with Capitol Records in July 1962 and released their first album, Surfin’ Safari, that same year. The Beach Boys are one of the most critically acclaimed and commercially successful bands of all time, with over 100 million records sold worldwide. Between the 1960s and today, the group had over 80 songs chart worldwide, 36 of them in the US Top 40 (the most by a US rock band), and four topping the Billboard Hot 100. Their influence on other artists spans musical genres and movements. Countless artists have cited Pet Sounds as their inspiration for creating their own musical masterpieces. Rolling Stone ranked Pet Sounds No. 2 on its list of the “500 Greatest Albums of All Time,” and The Beach Boys No. 12 on its list of the “100 Greatest Artists of All Time.” Inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1988 and recipients of The Recording Academy’s Lifetime Achievement GRAMMY Award®, The Beach Boys are a beloved American institution that remains iconic around the world. Classic Albums Live honors The Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band with a performance featuring some of the world’s best musicians and the San Diego Symphony Orchestra. Every detail of the album will be performed with precision and grace, from the sitars and orchestra to the guitars and kazoos. Classic Albums Live will deliver a performance that is note for note - cut for cut. Expect to hear all the hits, such as “When I’m Sixty-Four,” “A Day in the Life,” and “With a Little Help from My Friends.” But, also take a deeper dive into tracks like George Harrison’s experimental “Within Without You,” John Lennon’s fantastical “Being for The Benefit of Mr. Kite!” and McCartney’s gem “Fixing a Hole.” The second half of the show will take us even further into The Beatles catalog, celebrating a collection of their greatest hits that you know and love, found on their other legendary albums. It is Teach Music Week put on by Keep Music Alive and to help celebrate, we invite you and your family to join us for our popular free Traveling Ukulele Zoo! This exciting, hands-on musical experience is for children of all ages. It will be presented at Civita Park in the green space above the play structures with plenty of free parking. Bring your blanket and gather round to learn about, see, touch, strum, and hear the sounds of a dozen different kinds of ukuleles and similar stringed folk instruments. You'll enjoy a tall tale told by Guitars and Ukes in the Classroom’s (GITC) own tuning archangel, "Uncle Rodney" Howard, explore qualities that are special about each ukulele, and notice what the instruments have in common. Many children who have attended the "Ukulele Zoo" have discovered an instrument they like the most! This event will be facilitated by GITC founder, Jess Baron and "Uncle Rodney," with assistance from additional GITC teachers. It promises to spark inspiration for the child in all of us! The San Diego Archaeological Center is proud to host Donna Walker for an artifact drawing workshop. Unlike other professions where digital technology has replaced traditional methods, researchers in archaeology still rely on the detailed drawings that an illustrator can produce. Just open an archaeological report, magazine, or book, and you’ll find the majority of stone tools and pottery are shown as hand-done line drawings along with the photographs. Having both photographs and illustrations provides a complete analysis and a better representation of the artifact. In this class, you’ll learn this valuable technical skill of drawing chipped stone tools. Art supplies and snacks will be provided. Mainly Mozart and Tijuana community-based organization Promotora De Las Bellas Artes have partnered for a bi-national project to raise awareness for ocean conservation and the care and importance of our shared Cali-Baja Coast. Part of this program is a free community concert, “The Sea Unites Us,” May 5 at 5 p.m. at the UC San Diego Epstein Family Amphitheater. The Mainly Mozart Youth Orchestra will be joined by members of Tijuana’s Promotora de las Bellas Artes Children’s Choir, the San Diego Children’s Choir, and the SDSU Chamber Choir, as well as musicians and singers from the Baja California and Los Angeles regions performing works highlighting the importance of the shared Cali-Baja coast. Led by Maestro Hernan Constantino, the concert will feature new music from renowned Mexico City singer, conductor and composer Jorge Cózatl whose piece was inspired by research provided by the Walter Munk Foundation for the Oceans (WMFO) as well as the environmental learning and experiences of the students of Promotora de las Bellas Artes choir. Time to get weird at "The New Flesh Party", a film screening and music event where body horror meets dance at Digital Gym Cinema in East Village, San Diego on May 4th This unique event will kick off at 5pm with a screening of David Cronenberg's iconic masterpiece VIDEODROME, setting the tone for an evening where television is reality, and reality is less than television. After the screening, our film themed dance party will start in the lobby with acid house, disco and dark wave beats with an opening set by Eric Leonardis and a headlining set by the legendary DJ Mark E.
