  • Join instructor Suzanne Balestri to learn the basics of Fused Glass and create your own glass jewelry to keep for yourself or give as a gift. This fun workshop offers a perfect introduction to Kiln-Formed (fused) glass for beginners, and allows those who have worked with glass before to hone their abilities and finesse their skills. You will learn how fused glass differs from other forms of art glass, how to use the various tools involved in creating glass art, and how to cut and grind the glass you will be using in your wearable art project. Using a colorful array of glass and pre-fired adornments, you’ll construct abstract or representational designs to be fashioned into earrings, pendants, rings, cuff links, even belt buckles! Each student will have plenty of space in the kiln for several items! Your pieces will be fired in a glass kiln to completely fuse each design into one solid piece, and will be ready for you to pick up the following week. Workshop fee includes pre-workshop instructional videos, all glass, equipment, and kiln firing of several pieces. An additional supply fee of $10 (cash only) is due to instructor at the workshop. It includes pre-fused adornments plus jewelry findings for up to 3 items (excluding leather for bracelets/belts). Additional findings, chains, cording, and leather for bracelets and belts will also be available for cash purchase. This workshop is recommended for All Skill Levels – Ages 13 and up. We will explore the Japanese technique of carving yunomi cups. Working with mid fire clay, students will complete multiple projects and be able to utilize a wide array of glazes and colors throughout the course. All materials provided. You are invited to join us for “United By Yarn / Unidos Por El Estambre: A Celebration of Textile Art and Community Connection!” Embrace the beauty of fiber arts with a collaborative initiative brought to you by San Diego Craft Collective, Visions Museum of Textile Art, and Songbirds Music. This engaging project will support community-created yarn bombing projects for all three organizations and is set against the backdrop of VMOTA’s upcoming exhibition, “Latine: Entretejida / Interwoven” (May 11 to October 5, 2024). Come and contribute to the creation of community art, celebrating the diverse and rich textile heritage of the San Diego / Tijuana region! We’ll provide the yarn and tools . You provide your creative magic! Don’t know how to crochet or knit? We’ll have fiber mentors to help you learn & create! We will be using acrylic yarn (so it will withstand the outdoor weather for our installations) and will have crochet hooks available, while supplies last. If you already have your own knitting needles or crochet hook, we’d appreciate it if you’d bring it along to use. We are accepting donations so we have enough for this event.   • Learn to make a basket made from long leaf pine needles, using waxed Irish linen, an assortment of beads or other embellishments, starting with a stone center. Topics to be covered include the differences between pine needle types, preparing the needles, waxed Irish linen, basket centers, embellishing your basket, and how to start and how to finish your basket. Students have the option to weave a basket, a pendant, or an ornament. Basket Weaving is a wonderful way to recycle from nature and is also a meditative activity. No experience necessary.
