(Tickets Are Sold Out) The ATASC-San Diego Turkish Music Chorus will celebrate its first anniversary with a concert of Turkish classical and folk music. The chorus specializes in performing Turkish traditional music and seeks to preserve and promote the rich heritage of Turkish classical music, ensuring that this traditional art form continues to thrive. The First Anniversary Concert will include Turkish classical repertoire from the 17th–20th centuries as well as folk songs from different regions of Turkiye. The chorus will be accompanied by musicians playing traditional Turkish instruments including the ney (reed flute), oud (lute), darbuka (goblet drum), and kanun (zither). In its 18th year, the Borrego Art Institute’s Annual Plein Air Invitational promises another outstanding exhibition of plein air paintings focusing on the unique beauty and environmental significance of the Anza-Borrego Desert and the Borrego Valley. The exhibition will present a rich diversity of plein air paintings by a select group of 14 artists working in oils, watercolor and pastels, all producing work for the show during the week of March 4 – 9. Returning artists include Margaret Larlham, Geoffrey Allen and Natasha Isenhour. New work will go up daily in the main gallery March 4-8, and the gallery hours will be extended to 10 a.m. - 7 p.m. The awards and reception will be held Sat. March 9, 3 p.m. - 5 p.m. The show will be up through April 14. The Invitational will once again be curated by Kay Levie, Rick J. About the exhibition: A colorful mix of symbolic forms, representations of abstract thought, and expressions of shared universal mysteries are at the heart of the work Ving Simpson created for more than twenty years at his home studio in Oceanside. The installation is a nonlinear representation of years of creative artistic endeavors, processes, and materials crafted with primal and soulful qualities. A central focus of the gallery is a recreation of the shelves that lined the artist’s studio, displaying an array of small, emblematic sculptures. The objects and compositions are minimal in form, often consisting of repeating patterns in rows and columns. They are constructed from a variety of traditional and non-traditional materials including silver, bronze, wood, metal, tar paper, found objects, and glazed and unglazed clay bodies. Select paintings will also illustrate the artist’s explorations into his perceptions of reality, primarily a series of large banners in the museum’s Grand Stairwell exploring artistic interpretations of water as liquid, gas, and solid. His first painting on canvas, Dancing Nuns painted in 1994, will also feature prominently as an homage to the complexities of interpersonal relationships and how they may inspire an impulse to expand creative horizons. This is the work of a dedicated artist–a maker of well-crafted art objects inspired by a mix of art history, science, and a personal mythology, woven together in an attempt to understand the subtle and sublime mysteries of reality. Simpson says about his practice, “The human path is one of symbols and abstractions. Lacking the facility to fathom the intricacies and mathematics of modern cosmology, I choose to explore the order of the universe using a few simple tools and my intuition.” Curated by Vallo Riberto. Curebound, a San Diego-based philanthropic organization that raises and invests strategic funding in translational cancer research projects, will host its annual signature event, in partnership with the San Diego Padres, Padres Pedal the Cause, on Sunday, April 7 at Petco Park. The community is invited to come together in the fight against cancer by raising awareness and funds for innovative cancer research in San Diego. Now more than ten years strong and over $21 million raised, Padres Pedal the Cause brings the community together with one vision: a world without cancer. The event combines upbeat spinning, cycling, and running/walking courses with many opportunities to get involved and participate: Participants can select from one of three cycling courses (25, 40, 55, or 75 miles), all of which will take riders over the beautiful Coronado Bridge. Participants will also have the option to run or walk a scenic 5K course in downtown San Diego that finishes at Petco Park. Participants can take a 50-minute spin class all day long at Petco Park. New for 2024! Rocky Road: All new 40-mile gravel hybrid course. Take this challenge with your current road bike (minimum tire width 35mm) or on a mountain bike for better handling. Families and friends are encouraged to take a first step toward ending cancer as part of this inspiring community challenge. 100% of every dollar raised from this event funds collaborative cancer research between Curebound’s six institutional research partners: Moores Cancer Center at UC San Diego Health, Salk Institute, Sanford Burnham Prebys, Rady Children’s Hospital, La Jolla Institute for Immunology, and Scripps Research. Oceanside Theatre Company’s newest exhibit “Black Perspective: A Celebration of Community, Family & Heritage” runs through March 24 at the Brooks Theater Gallery in the lobby of the Sunshine Brooks Theater in Oceanside and can be viewed cost-free.Thematically aligned with two of the theater’s major events at the beginning of the year, “Black Perspective” complements the performing arts taking place on stage. The first event, “Generational Black Pioneers: Oceanside Firsts” on February 17 and 18, highlights black leaders who have fought for change in Oceanside. In March, OTC is thrilled to produce the San Diego Premiere of “Chicken & Biscuits,” a feel-good comedy written by black playwright Douglas Lyons and centered around the complex dynamics of a modern black family. Lyons was one of a record-breaking eight black playwrights whose work was on Broadway in 2021, but forced to shutdown due to ongoing Covid cases. Featuring 29 artists, 12 of whom are showing at the Brooks Theater Gallery for the first time, “Black Perspective” includes a myriad of different styles including portraits, sculptures, nail art, and powerful social justice themes.
