Dr. Ignato will share about some of the cutting-edge research projects being worked on and will bring biotech interns to talk about their research projects. Shared spaces are the future of our common life in the city. During the modernist era a term public space was used to define such places but the constitution of them were much more based on local economic and anthropocentric criteria, which allowed a strong touristification of public spaces and their transformation into the places of the production of private capital. As the so popular business construction PPP (private public partnership) didn’t deliver to the community realities, needs and/or desires for people inhabiting stressed circumstances of the area. As Marjetica Potrč states “the communities imagine the future city as a network of neighbourhoods and neither group was interested in public space, but they were all interested in shared space, community space,” it is important to follow some of the main paradigms of the changing world to therefore make a new agreement that is not human centred. Decolonizing methodologies can change the perception of ownership into caretaker. The first step is a definition of a new vocabulary based on trust and creating a ritual of transition within structuring new relationships in space. Doc. dr. Boštjan Bugarič is an architect, researcher, curator, critic and editor. Since 2014 he has been an editor at the open source community Architectuul in Berlin. For the University of Primorska in Koper he coordinated the accreditation and established the Faculty of Built Environment (2008-13), where he took a position of the acting dean (2011 – 2013). In 2017 was a research collaborator at Faculty of Architecture Ljubljana. He is a professor at the Visual art and Design department at the Faculty of Pedagogy in Koper. He exhibited at the U3 Triennial of Contemporary Art in Slovenia in MSUM+ Ljubljana (2013). Since 2016 he has been coordinating the Architectuul’s associated partnership at the Future Architecture Platform. Architectuul is a member of the LINA research project. UC San Diego Music is honored to welcome composer and jazz legend HENRY THREADGILL to campus: Tuesday, February 6 at 8 p.m. at the Conrad Prebys Music Center, Experimental Theater. A guest of fellow Pulitzer Prize winner, Distinguished Professor of Music Anthony Davis, Mr. Threadgill is a composer, saxophonist, and flautist. He was awarded the 2016 Pulitzer Prize in Music for his album: "In for a Penny, In for a Pound." Mr. Threadgill will coach and perform with UC San Diego Music graduate students, to perform excerpts from his album: "Dirt...And More Dirt." "The Witness is a Whale" reveals one of the greatest environmental crimes of the 20th Century - the secret and illegal slaughter of hundreds of thousands of whales by the Soviet Union and Japan during the Cold War. Through never-before-seen archival footage, hidden documents, and personal records kept by Soviet scientists, "The Witness Is a Whale" exposes this ruthless killing for the first time on film. Our documentary also recounts the post-whaling recovery of many different whale species and highlights their overall importance to the health of our oceans. Friday, February 16 & Monday, February 19 from 9 a.m. – Noon Ages 3-6 welcome! Taught by a variety of nurturing educators and skilled artists, your preschool age child will go on seasonal explorations celebrating the season, observing, and learning about various things in nature in our on-site organic garden. They will explore through sensory activities, crafts and stories while developing fine motor skills. Campers will make season-themed crafts in various mediums–clay, wood and textiles. Littles learn best by doing and playing. We practice handwork and workplay. We “play” with natural objects and materials such as wood, stones, clay, felt, paper + more! Each project is planned so that children build skills while satisfying their need to explore. Projects are safe, non-toxic, earth friendly, and full of creativity. It’s important that your child bring water in a refillable bottle and a snack (no candy or peanut products please) in case they are hungry or thirsty during this time. In addition, if your child is enrolled in a nearby camp elsewhere in Liberty Station in the afternoon, and their camp begins as ours ends, we are happy to walk your child to their next camp. Two upcoming dates: Sunday, Feb 11 -or- Sunday, March 10, from 1-4 p.m. Join us in the woodshop for this 3-hour kumiko skill-building workshop! Kumiko is an ancient Japanese woodworking technique of assembling individual pieces of wood, without the use of nails, into geometric patterns. Kumiko has been used in constructing shoji screens, latticework, and other decorative elements in traditional Japanese architecture. In this workshop, students will learn the basics of kumiko, including the use of hand tools to cut the pieces and assemble the frame. Each student will work on a small project to finish and take home. Materials are provided. We recommend students bring their own eye protection, ear protection & apron. No experience necessary.
