Louis Menand is the Lee Simpkins Family Professor of Arts and Sciences and the Anne T. and Robert M. Bass Professor of English at Harvard University. He has contributed to The New Yorker since 1991, and has been a staff writer since 2001. His book The Metaphysical Club was awarded the 2002 Pulitzer Prize for history and the Francis Parkman Prize from the Society of American Historians. His book "The Free World: Art and Thought in the Cold War" was published in 2021 and named a notable book of the year by the New York Times Book Review. Join the San Diego School of Christian Studies for an investigation into what’s critical to being a neighbor and how to develop being a neighbor to all. The discussion will be led by Dr. Andre J. Branch, President Emeritus and a very active member of the San Diego NAACP and an Associate Professor of Multicultural Education, Ethnic Identity Development, and Valuing Human Diversity at San Diego State University. In recent years, there has been a growing movement for the recognition and inclusion of Afro- Argentines in the national narrative. Activists, scholars and Afro-Argentine organizations have been working to raise awareness about the African contributions to Argentine society, challenge racism and promote equal rights. Efforts have also been made to document and preserve Afro-Argentine history and culture, as well as to promote representation in media, politics and other spheres. In this talk, Gaby Messina reflects on the current conditions of Afro visibility based on her own personal experience as an artist. She is a visual artist from Argentina whose work extends over two decades. She is the author of several books of photography and short films. Her work has been exhibited in numerous museums and galleries around the world. Her main areas of interest are visual representations of the African diaspora in Latin America with a focus on Afro-Argentines and their descendants.
