As George’s memoir "All Boys Aren’t Blue" has reached massive success as a New York Times bestseller, it has become the American Library Association’s third most challenged book of 2021. But with each shove, George continues to persevere and advocate for Black and queer voices. “Black storytelling has often been banned,” George says, “My book is a tool so that Black queer kids and LGBTQ teens can see themselves, and read about themselves, and learn about themselves.” In this talk, George speaks on the importance of sharing diverse stories: why we should remain resilient, how representation in media can support young adults’ mental and physical health and what we can do to support these voices. By listening to one another and understanding the history, language and actions necessary to change the world, we can form a community where we are all free to be our true, authentic selves. The author will be signing books shortly after the event.

Ballscene House Mother, Grand Dutchess and Miss Montana Two-Spirit Drag Queen Landa Lakes, (J Miko Thomas) will perform traditional Chickasaw Story and Dance that explores the current issue of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Femmes in the United States, Mexico and Canada. Through the arts of drag, traditional stories and memories of her upbringings, Land Lakes will show what it means to be Chickasaw, and further, a Native American Two-Spirit. This presentation will include dance films, Chickasaw stories, plays and children's dances. Through original music, lip sync and drag performance, Landa Lakes opens the stage for the embodiment of pain and resilience. These performances and offerings are a prayer to heal wounds and bring to light the importance of the intimate and vulnerable Two-Spirit stories. We will conclude with time for a Question-and-Answer session, to discuss Two-Spirit performance, and the futures of Indigenous people’s survivance.

About Lori Bell | Brooklyn native Lori Bell is a flutist and composer of admirable depth and broad musical sympathies. A resident of San Diego, she has contributed to the development of higher standards of performance while earning acclaim from both peers and critics for her artistry on stage and in recordings. Bell plays with confidence and taste, with a proclivity toward the more subtle means of emotional expression. Her playing inherently has a many-layered depth that reveals a more meaningful art. She renders ballads with exceptional sensitivity while bringing wonderful nuances to swing and be-bop, which she plays with power, agility and a natural élan. Her phrasing, evocative of birds, shows the strong influence of Eric Dolphy, yet is rendered with such purity of tone and range of timbre that it is clearly of a different ornithology. About Eric Evans | The Eric Evans Project is a collaboration of talented musicians that produce original pop/smooth jazz music. Eric has had the privilege of being a featured performer Concert Venues, Jazz Festivals and as a music director for numerous churches. He has produced Three previous CD's including his third “Waves of Grace” with Singer/Songwriter David Eugene Ivey.
