Culinary Historians of San Diego will present “Columbian Exchange: the Positives,” with Barbara Baxter, at 10:30 a.m. January 20 in the Neil Morgan Auditorium of the San Diego Central Library. How did Christopher Columbus’ voyage to the New World in 1492 change the American cuisine? Barbara will describe and illustrate how important the transfer of animals, grains, spices and more greatly influenced the cuisines of the New and Old Worlds. Barbara Baxter is a popular Culinary Historians of San Diego presenter. Her main interest is in wine, whose history is naturally interlinked with food. After studying wine at Paris’ University of Sorbonne, she continued her study of its history. Barbara has been featured in the Wall Street Journal, and has lectured at many museums and UC universities in California. You will be guided as needed in glass cutting techniques and design considerations. Each student will have approximately 8” x 8” of space in the kiln so 1-2 vases can be made. Refresh your wardrobe with personalized creativity! In this workshop, you will design and sew your own quilt blocks and attach them to a pre-loved item of your choosing (we recommend you bring a tote bag or jacket*). You’ll leave with a one-of-a-kind item you’ll be proud to use or wear. Intuitive quilting is the process of creating a quilt (or quilt block) using your intuition and sense of creativity. You’ll select fabric scraps in shapes and colors that you’re drawn to without too much planning. We’ll move through the process without limits, allowing for creativity to flow freely. This course is for beginners and seasoned quilters alike. If you’ve never used a sewing machine before, you’ll be guided on how to sew simple straight lines, gentle curves and how to appliqué. If you’ve sewn apparel or quilts using patterns before, you’ll be encouraged to put away the “rules” and sometimes rigid guidelines of traditional quilting to tap into a more freeform and intuitive way of quilting. Create a unique Bandsaw Box! In this one-day workshop, students will create a bandsaw box with a pivoting lid. Students will leave this workshop with a bandsaw box of their own and the skills to begin creating their own designs. In this class we will cover shop safety and use of the bandsaw, spindle sander, edge sander, drill press, as well as various hand tools. In addition, we will cover the mixed media process of flocking. Students will also learn sanding best practices and how to achieve a perfect finish. We welcome all makers, from beginners to advanced. This is a benefit show for Second Chance, a San Diego charity whose mission is to disrupt the cycle of incarceration by helping at-risk youth and justice-involved people towards empowered self-sufficiency.
