**Note special hours for exhibition opening: Saturday, June 27, 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. Visions Museum of Textile Art is honored to be one of four U.S. venues to host the "17th Quilt Nihon," making a debut of this internationally recognized exhibition in San Diego. This exhibit features award-winning, innovative works from the biennial competition of the Japanese Handicraft Instructor’s Association (JHIA). Quilt Nihon is the largest international quilt contest in Japan, and one of the most prestigious in the world. For 50 years now, JHIA has promoted handcrafted arts in Japan by educating and training instructors in eight specialties: quilting, knitting, embroidery, lace making, painting, weaving, leatherwork, and flower art. The JHIA boasts 7,000 certified quilt instructors among its 12,000 members. Its biennial Quilt Nihon exhibition is a unique opportunity to appreciate the creativity and complexity of these works of art. This year’s exhibition features award-winning and notable works in its selection. Drawing inspiration from artists like Tom Petty, The War on Drugs, and Wilco, the band has a throwback feeling with a modern sense of renewal. Frontman Drew Lawrence, who co-wrote Christina Perri's multi-platinum breakthrough hit "Jar of Hearts," brings a seasoned songwriting touch to the band, helping songs like "Break in the Light," "Easy Times," and "Light in the City" become quick fan favorites. On June 30, Sound Praxis presents an evening of electronic and electroacoustic music by Mike Nigro, Matthew D. Gantt, Ess Whiteley, and Jonathan Piper. This presentation is generously hosted by Brown Building in City Heights! **Mike Nigro** is an electronic musician and label operator based in Sydney, Australia (previously Brooklyn, NY and Newark, Delaware). His solo practice and collaborations draw inspiration from the minimalists, early synthesizer pioneers, and contemporary experimental underground. His work explores the spaces between musicality and noise; movement and stasis; synthetics and organics. **Matthew D. Gantt** is an artist, composer, and educator focused on sound in virtual spaces, generative systems facilitated by idiosyncratic technology, and digital production presets as sonic readymades. He worked as a studio assistant to electronic music pioneer Morton Subotnick, and has been an active participant in the international creative community, presenting or performing at spaces such as Pioneer Works, Issue Project Room, Roulette, Babycastles, SVA Visible Futures Lab, Panoply Performance Laboratory, EMPAC, the Wrong Biennale, and countless DIY venues across North America. **Ess Whiteley** is a composer, performer, sound, & intermedia artist. Their work combines electronics with acoustic instruments, multimedia, repurposed technological objects, and sonic artifacts to produce audible worlds that explore temporal elasticity, living memory, haunted presents, and strange posthuman mutations. Sometimes hyperreal and maximal, other times hypnotic and meditative, their work plays with perceptual ambiguity, reference, technological agency, and absurdity, generating entangled, synthetic-organic architectures that shift between moving states of entropy, periodicity, and stasis. **Jonathan Piper** is a San Diego-based tubist and technologist. His work as a tubist centers on the exploration of sonic and gestural possibilities found at the limits of both the instrument and the performing body. Supported by extended techniques and live electronic processing, he combines elements of drone, doom, noise, free jazz, and contemporary idioms. Jonathan performs as a soloist and in collaboration with musicians including Ryan Ebaugh, Michelle Lou, Stevie Richards, Nathan Hubbard, Nathan Berlinguette, Meghann Welsh, and Nick Lesley. He has presented work at Oracle Egg's BROILER Residency Series, Drone Not Drones, High Desert Soundings, Project [BLANK]'s Working Title, Sudden Somethings From Nothing, and Vernacular New Music. From the musical mastermind that brought you ProgJect - The Ultimate Prog Rock Experience, Jonathan Mover now delivers the same for jazz-rock: PffT - A Modern Take on Classic Fusion. Similar to ProgJect, Mover has assembled a variety of medleys, as a tribute and homage to the masters of fusion, a.k.a., Jeff Beck, Billy Cobham, Allan Holdsworth, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Tony Williams, Weather Report, and Brand X, to begin with. Also similar to ProgJect, this music is not easy to play, nor is it for the faint of heart. It was going to take a select few from an even smaller pool to choose from to make this other “dream gig” come true. Mike Keneally was Mover’s first thought, “On any instrument he wants to play,” and happily welcomed Mike’s immediate reply, “Absolutely! Can I play keyboards?” Done. It was Keneally who recommended Bryan Beller on bass, someone Mover was very familiar with but had not had the opportunity to play with, until now. The guitar spot was the last to fill. There were the obvious fusion monsters out there, but one ‘new name’, recommended by many, kept coming up, “Andrew Synowiec,” so Mover started making calls. The initial response from several was, “This sounds amazing, please send me some medleys to check out.” The next response was, “This stuff is amazing, but would take too many brain cells,” except for one... Andrew Synowiec, “I’m down.” And thus, PffT was formed. Playing Lots of Notes from Jeff Beck, Billy Cobham, Allan Holdsworth, Tony Williams, Weather Report, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Brand X, and more.
