Please join us to hear from our special guest speaker Roger Lin, a senior attorney from the Center for Biological Diversity. This talk will examine the importance of energy justice, which includes equity and environmental justice, as we transition to cleaner energy sources in order to mitigate the climate crisis. Roger will do a presentation on distributed energy resources (DERs) generally and how they are a better way to reach our climate goals vs. bulk transmission buildout (which is inefficient, more expensive, and presents significant impacts to communities and wildlife). He will delve into a study done in March 2023 by him and his associates Howard Crystal and Jean Su entitled, Rooftop Solar Justice: Why Net Metering is Good for People and the Planet and Why Monopoly Utilities Want to Kill It. There will be time allotted for questions from the audience. There is no charge for this online event, but you must register in advance. The series opens on Sunday, September 17, with the violin and piano duo of Regina Carter and Xavier Davis, who last performed on the Athenaeum series in 2005. Hailed as the foremost jazz violinist of her generation, Regina Carter’s quest for beauty combined with her passion for excellence did not escape the attention of the MacArthur Foundation, which awarded her a prestigious “genius grant” fellowship. She is also a recipient of a Doris Duke Artist Award, has been named an NEA Jazz Master, and is a three-time Pulitzer Prize jurist. She tours worldwide with her own group and has appeared with such performers as Wynton Marsalis, Kenny Barron, Ray Brown, Mary J. Blige, Chucho Valdés, Billy Joel, Dolly Parton, and Omara Portuondo. Let’s celebrate the season with Berry Good Food, Herb and Wood, and Darnall Charter School! Executive Chef, Carlos Anthony will be serving up a three course, family style dinner inspired by the very school garden you’ll be dining in! We will be hosted by Jessica Eves, school garden and culinary educator/coordinator at Darnall. Berry Good Food first became acquainted with Jessica’s amazing program through our, “Seeds for the Future” School Garden Grant. In this past year, we’ve collaborated on a garden-to-table cooking class put on by Chef Carlos and the Herb and Wood team, and have supported their strawberry planting project. We know this is just the beginning of what’s possible for this school garden collaboration. Your support of this dinner will go directly towards garden and cooking initiatives that serve as building blocks for community health and well being. This Hobbit Day, journey to the East Kingdom for an enchanting evening of song, story, and dance. Spend the last evening of summer in a beautiful amphitheatre at the Water Conservation Garden in El Cajon. There, innovative classical production company Cinballera Entertainment is putting on "Lady of the Ring," a chamber ballopera based on J.R.R. Tolkien's timeless saga "The Lord of the Rings." The story will be told twice, first through song and then through dance. The opera is composed of diverse songs, including a rare song cycle commissioned by Tolkien himself, with words in English and the Elvish language from the books. The ballet includes original choreography to a piano concerto by Dmitri Shostakovich. Both were arranged, staged, and directed by Cinballera's co-founders, sisters Tiffany and Rebekah Brannan. A fellowship of nine performers will bring a concise, artistic take on this story to life. Led by the Brannan sisters, the cast includes talented professional opera singers and ballet dancers who have performed around the world. The opera will be performed with live piano accompaniment. Cinballera stands for Cinema, Ballet, and Opera, the three inspirations behind this unique production company. "Lady of the Ring" wasn't based on the popular Peter Jackson films, though. It was inspired by the classic novels, which this program encapsulates like a movie from the Golden Era of Hollywood. The show will last around an hour and a half. Allow us to transport you to Middle Earth for one enchanted evening!
