San Diego nonprofits come together to fundraise in unity, with countywide day-of-giving. This year, 338 organizations have signed on to participate in the fundraising campaign. Only in its third year, the campaign has almost tripled its nonprofit participants; 120 organizations participated in the program’s inaugural year. San Diegans can begin giving Thursday, August 17, when early giving opens, through the end of Thursday, September 7, to their favorite charities, which can be filtered by categories, including Animals, Education, Environment, Military and Humanitarian Aid, and more. Donors can choose to give to one or more nonprofits through the San Diego Gives platform. It is straightforward to learn about new organizations and their work. There are a diverse range of cause areas, including the arts, animal welfare, the environment, education, health, human services, equity, social justice, and more. Come and explore the gorgeous natural blue of indigo in this perfect-for-summer workshop. Students will learn a range of shibori dye resist processes in this hands-on, creative workshop, including tegumo (spiderweb), ori nui (stitched), and itajime (clamped) shibori methods. We will be using a natural indigo vat to dye a bamboo scarf and better understand the process and symbiotic relationship with indigo dye and this traditional textile surface design. Students will acquire the basic techniques to continue their journey into creating beautiful, unique textiles. This class is appropriate for ages 12+ years old. WishWell Counseling & Empowerment Center will hold its Grand Opening Celebration. With the goal of bringing a holistic, innovate approach to the mental health space, WishWell will offer both traditional therapy and alternative, dynamic experiences to support the needs of children and teens throughout San Diego County and beyond. The grand opening will kick off with welcome remarks and a ribbon cutting ceremony with Chula Vista Mayor John McCann at 4:30 p.m. Attendees will have an opportunity to meet WishWell therapists and empowerment coaches, tour the center and enjoy exclusive grand opening specials. The celebration will also feature family-friendly activities where teens and parents can Drop a Wish, writing down a wish on a 2x2 ceramic tile, yell their worries away in the Roar Room, play Subsoccer and participate in a special raffle. Create a Necklace Pendant together! San Diego Craft Collective welcomes Ashley Lohr, a special guest artist and educator from Southeast Alaska this month! In this workshop, students will be introduced to the art of powder enamel and learn the skills to create a gorgeous necklace pendant — matching or unique to the individual. This is the perfect workshop for a child and adult who love exploring new creative crafts together! Important Information: - Note that the price is per person making a project, so please add to your order as many as will participate in making their own project. - Learn how to prep, sift enamel, clean fire scale, and fire with a handheld butane torch (torch will only be handled by adults). - Pairs of adult & child will have their own enameling station/will not be sharing materials. - Choose from a variety of copper metal shapes to enamel on. - Work with 11 Thompson powder enamel colors to choose your palette. - Use stencils and sgraffito tools to layer in your own unique designs. - All jewelry created will be ready to wear at the end of the workshop. - Students will be using lead-free Thompson enamel on copper metal. Enamel is a glassy compound applied to and bonded by heat (fusion) to a metal surface. Masks and safety goggles will be provided. - This workshop is for beginners and for those who’d like a refresher. - This class is appropriate for ages 8+ years and older with an adult who will handle all use of the blow torch. - All materials to create one necklace pendant per person are included.
