The Parker Edison Project podcast is back for our 3rd season. Season one was about people, stories so riveting we could just press play and let the magic shine. Season two was things, unique topics and ideas. Season 3 is places, geo-politics. The way environments, people, and power work in a continuum. I’ll introduce you to some people and eateries you should get more familiar with. Plus, we brought back our resident tastemaker King Dice for some brand new “MMSM” segments. This workshop teaches the basics in Stained Glass. No previous glass experience is needed. During the workshop, students will complete a small project using glass they select from a variety of colors and textures. Different patterns are available to choose from. Students will learn how to handle glass, cut and grind glass, apply copper foil, and solder pieces together. Glass is included in the class price and all tools are supplied. An ancient and eco-centered craft, Natural Dyes are a place to connect with the beauty and bounty of our planet’s rich offerings while creating with color and using our hands and minds to refresh our homes, wardrobes and to create one-of-a-kind palettes. At this hands-on workshop you will learn to confidently approach Natural Dyes & Mordant so you’ll be ready to continue on your own. If you’ve ever looked into using Natural Dyes, you may have been intimidated by the many facets of the process. We’ll cover them all–scour, mordants, dye prep, dyeing & finishing–in great detail so you can get to creating with natural color today. No experience necessary. Age 15+ welcome! All materials included. Each Student will Receive: • Intro to Natural Dyes booklet • Samples from the dye pots • 3 scarves to dye (your choice: Chiffon Silk, Habotai Silk or Rayon-Bamboo)

Have you always been intrigued by beautiful handwoven textiles, wanted to understand how they were made, and maybe learn this ancient craft? Then this is a class for you. In this 2-day workshop, you will be introduced to the age-old practice of weaving and discover the rewarding aspect of creating objects for useful or decorative purpose. Weaving can also be a meditative parenthesis in our fast-paced world. You will learn the basic weaving techniques needed to set you on your weaver’s journey such as: – How to warp a tapestry loom – Plain tapestry weave (single and double weft tapestry) – Weft interlock and slit weave – Weft-faced color blending – Turkish knots (if we have sufficient time). We will weave 4 mug rugs each representing a different technique learned in class. Students will work on a vertical tapestry loom (18”×24”) which can be taken home each week to practice and work on the project assigned. A variety of natural hand-dyed yarn will be available. Students are welcome to bring their own yarn, as well as a heavy metal fork to use as a beater to pack the weft threads down. Materials fee: $10 (please come with cash and pay the instructor at the start of the workshop), and a security deposit of $50 will be required at the beginning of the class for the loan of the loom. This workshop is appropriate for ages 12+ years old

Create a professional arm-rod-and-mouth puppet of your very own from Rene Rubalcava, owner and puppeteer of LV Puppet Studio of Las Vegas who learned the art of puppet making from a Jim Henson Muppeteer. In this workshop, we guide you from start to finish as you select, cut, hot glue and assemble the pieces and personality of your own customized puppet. No sewing is required in this workshop. Students bring their puppets to life with their own unique interests and imaginations, and by choice and placement of different face details. Each one is unique! Afghan Parwana Circus, in collaboration with Fern Street Circus and Aerial Revolution Entertainment, invites you to a special one-night performance by San Diego circus artists. From 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., attendees of all ages are welcome to stop by and enjoy a free evening of live music featuring musicians from ARTS DISTRICT’s own, Apt 4 Music. San Diego Watercolor Society is pleased to present the opening of a water-based media exhibition titled “Under the Moon.” The opening reception will take place Friday, August 4 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. and will feature over 95 ready-to-hang original paintings. Mockingbird Improv is thrilled to be hosting “All Hands on Deck,” a wild and wacky improv game show from 9 p.m. to 10:15 p.m.. Veltz Fine Art Gallery will be hosting a closing reception for their exhibition titled “Vital,” which features works from three artists including Kenda Francis, Laura Lehmnan, and Colleen Veltz and raises awareness for the local Project Wildlife under the guardianship of the Humane Society from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. San Diego Craft Collective will have their doors open for a community mending event taking place from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m..
