Explore Handbuilding with Clay! Friday, June 26, 4:30-6:30 p.m. Ages 12+ welcome! Join us for a fun, hands-on introduction to handbuilding with clay! In this workshop, you’ll explore a hand-building technique called ‘pinching’ to create a small vessel or plant pot, perfectly-sized for succulents or herbs. This beginner-friendly project focuses on forming pots using just your hands—no tools or wheels needed! You’ll learn how to shape, smooth, and personalize your pot while enjoying a relaxed, creative time. And, when you’ve completed your project, each student will choose from a variety of glazes for the piece to finished in. It’s a great way to get your hands dirty and your creativity flowing while making something ready for use (after it’s been fired)! Grab a friend, enjoy some clay therapy, and discover the joy of crafting with clay! Our cartoon is "Plane Crazy" (1928), the first Mickey Mouse cartoon to be produced... but the fourth to be released. Next is another important first: "The Lucky Dog" (1921). This Stan Laurel film features a character actor named Oliver Hardy. It would be five years before they made another film together, and made history! And our own Russ Peck will provide live piano music! In "One Good Turn" (1931), an elderly woman gives food to Depression victims Stan and Ollie, so they decide to help her out. Stan's young daughter Lois was upset that Stan always got the worst of it from Ollie, so in this film the tables are turned... Another first! Other films include "The Finishing Touch," "The Stolen Jools," "The Midnight Patrol," and our first showing of a special tribute to Oliver Hardy. Learn to Make the perfect loaf of Sourdough Bread! Saturday, June 20, from 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. In this 3-hour workshop, you will learn all about sourdough, and how to make your first loaf of sourdough bread with organic flour and local sourdough starter. Nothing tastes quite like fresh-baked, naturally leavened bread!* We’ll explain fermentation and have a brief discussion about the benefits of making and eating fermenting foods. We’ll show you how easy it is to start making naturally-leavened bread yourself at home! We’ll have a variety of sourdough bread flavors and will bake bread fresh during the workshop. And you’ll do it yourself by rolling up your sleeves and making your very own dough (to be baked the next day!). Includes your own sourdough starter and take-home loaf of sourdough bread! Note: You will also need to turn your dough for about 2 hours after the class to prepare it for baking! * Please note: In the workshop, we will NOT be showing how to make gluten-free dough. In preparation for this workshop, please bring the following items from your kitchen: a heavy mixing bowl; at least 3 quarts size would be best (we will have some if you absolutely don’t have one to bring) a digital kitchen scale (we have some too, but it will make it faster if some people like you bring one) a clean dish towel (to cover your dough in the bowl) a thin spatula or dough whisk, if you have one a pint-size or larger mason jar with a lid to capture your sourdough starter. This is also optional, as we can put them in baggies, but if we can use less plastic, yay us!! Optional: an apron (it won’t be that messy, but if you have a favorite one you like, bring it!) or purchase a Craft Collective apron & support our studio! Learn to Carve a Spoon! Choose from two upcoming dates: June 21 Or July 12, from 9 a.m. - 2 p.m. Beginning spoon carving. In this introduction course of carving Woodworker Paul Maschka will be sharing the ancient style of green wood hand carving with simple but very precise hand tools–a small carving axe, straight blade carving knife and a curved hook knife. With proper techniques, green wood can be intricately sculpted into extremely beautiful, functional and unique pieces of art. Paul specializes in Viking-era cutlery. This Scandinavian style is still being crafted around the world. In this workshop, students will be creating a straight tea spoon or straight cooking spoon. This class is designed for the beginner as well as more experienced carvers. There is no prerequisite for this class. All of the necessary tools and materials will be available to students for this class. Tools and chopping blocks will be available for purchase after the class. No experience necessary. Nature journaling is a practice that can help you learn faster, connect more deeply with nature, and regulate your nervous system. In this 3-hour interactive workshop, Instructor Marley Peifer will share the simple yet revolutionary approaches at the core of nature journaling. While using drawings, words and numbers to observe the plants and organic garden at San Diego Craft Collective, students will also learn how these techniques can play a role in mental health, attention management, community science, transferable skill-building and behavior change. Students need to bring a notebook or sketch book (even a few sheets of lined paper are fine), a pen and/or pencil (colors aren’t as important for this workshop), and your curiosity. Leave with sketches and notes tracing your learning adventure. No experience necessary. A 10-lesson advanced online course in Ladino (Judeo-Spanish) for learners who wish to strengthen their reading, speaking, and grammatical command of the language. Each session uses authentic Sephardi texts, poetry, and song to build vocabulary and fluency, with grammar topics covering verb tenses, moods, and the indicative vs. subjunctive contrast The course is taught by Esther Rute, a certified Ladino language teacher who holds a BA in Semitic Philology and two MAs in Jewish History and Spanish Studies from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. She is the External Advisor to the National Authority for Ladino and Deputy Editor of Aki Yerushalayim.
