Join us on Friday, June 9 for a discussion on "Tire (flowers)" (2001) by Betsabeé Romero (b. 1963), a piece from MCASD's permanent collection. Then, using the artwork as inspiration, design and create your own unique series of handmade prints. Participants may attend this single session and create standalone artwork, or attend multiple sessions. The artwork from this session can be added to a handmade artist’s book during the final session. This workshop is part of Reflections, an eight-session workshop series designed to serve adults 55 and older. Learn from trained Museum educators about Contemporary art, and together with friends, share inspired connections and tell your personal story through art. Only 15 spots available. The alt punk band HRZN will be hitting San Diego's Kensington Club on May 31. Be sure to check out their merch table. From hand-dying t-shirts from their local shop to gemstone bracelets with meaning behind them (rose quartz = self love), HRZN advocates for mental health support in all areas of their craft. Their handmade sensory bracelets (ranging from free-$1) are designed after the method of Circle Breathing (inhale for four counts, hold for four counts, and exhale for four counts) reflected by the reminder of the four bead pattern (The Pearl is count one, followed by 2,3,4, then repeat)! This helps with anxiety, grounding from panic attacks, overstimulation or simply acts as something to fiddle with while reminding us to be kind to ourselves. (There is so much more, too.) We are collaborating with Gente Unida, a human rights coalition dedicated to sharing stories of humanity and perseverance. Together, we will create and experience art that highlights stories of our border region: Art activity: Our Neighborhood Transform hanging objects and small playhouses into a community neighborhood inspired by Muñoz’s artwork - our very own Postales (Postcard) come to life! Art activity: Hello Neighbor! Draw and paint on postcards that can be sent to a neighbor or friend through our special mailbox. Schedule | At 10 a.m., explore Celia Álvarez Muñoz’s work with a kid-friendly tour of her exhibition. At 11a.m., learn about people’s experiences in the border region with a special presentation by Gente Unida. At 12:30 a.m., listen to bilingual stories, songs, and rhymes in storytime with Ms. Katia from the La Jolla/Riford Library.  There will also be live music by DJ Pebo, a cozy book nook, and an interactive, free play area in Jacobs Hall.   *Museum admission is free from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. for all visitors, with Prebys Play Day offerings happening between 10 a.m. – 1 p.m.

Dave Tooley, President of the San Diego Civil War Round Table, will speak on “Civil War Railroads.” When the shooting began in 1861, the Union had a head start with most of the country’s railroad trackage and the advantage of standardized gauge. Further, those in charge of the United States Military Railroad were railroaders who knew what was needed, while the Confederate Military Railroad had a much more difficult time of it.
