We will also be donating at least 15% of each registration to Team Hoyt, which works to build the individual character, confidence and self-esteem of America’s disabled and physically challenged young people through inclusion in all facets of daily life. In the spring of 1977, Rick Hoyt told his father, Dick Hoyt, that he wanted to participate in a 5-mile benefit run for a lacrosse player who had been paralyzed in an accident. Far from being a long-distance runner, Dick agreed to push Rick in his wheelchair and they finished all 5 miles, coming in next to last. That night, Rick told his father, “Dad, when I’m running, it feels like I’m not handicapped.” These medals are GARAGE MADE – that’s right, they were made right here in our very garage! We’ve been adding some locally made medals, and these ones are made of slate and turned out so beautiful! This medal is 5 inches and comes with a Virtual Race Events bib where you can write in your race, distance and time. What: This is a 1M 5K 10K 13.1 26.2 virtual run (or walk) to celebrate the awesome Dads out there! You choose which distance you want to complete. When: Complete your race any time in June 2023! Medals will start shipping out mid-May! Where: You choose the course and you time yourself (you’ll report your finishing time to us). Why: Because this is our way of celebrating Father’s Day and to help raise funds for an amazing organization: Team Hoyt Cost: The price is $17.99 and that includes your medal, bib and donation to charity. 15% of every entry will be donated to Team Hoyt. *We are in no way affiliated with this charity, we like to choose a different charity for each of our races and are happy to raise funds for them. What is a virtual race? A virtual race is a race that can be run (or walked) from any location you choose. You can run, jog, or walk on the road, on the trail, on the treadmill, at the gym or on the track (or even at another race). You get to run your own race, at your own pace, and time it yourself. Running and walking on your own, or with friends! And your medal will be shipped directly to you. Complete a virtual 5Ks, 10K, half marathon and more! Each of our races benefits a different charity. Summer Movies in the Park is the largest free and family-friendly outdoor movie series in San Diego County, with dozens of hosting sites and over a hundred screenings. It launched in 2007 as a ‘take back our parks’ initiative – in sync with the County’s Live Well vision to sustain safe, healthy and thriving communities. Shows run May through October, in neighborhoods from the beach to the desert, and everything in between. Each movie event gives residents a reason to visit their local parks after dark, deterring inappropriate loitering and park use, and bringing additional safety and security to residents’ favorite locales. Events begin as early as 5 p.m., though actual movie start times are 15 minutes after sunset. Before the movie, many locations provide additional entertainment like arts and crafts, games, costume contests, music, dancing and food trucks. FAQ: What should I bring? Plan to bring chairs or blankets for your comfort. Chairs are not provided at any of our events. Also, feel free to pack a picnic and enjoy your meal under the stars! Some locations will have food available, so check the Event Specifics section of each location and date for more details. Bring a sweater or light jacket – it will cool down once the sun sets. What if it rains? In the event of rain or high winds a movie may be canceled. If it rains on the day of the movie you’re planning to attend, please contact the Parks & Recreation office to get up-to-date information on possible cancellations. Explore the bizarre and captivating world of carnivorous plants with this fascinating exhibition. In addition to a collection of real carnivorous species on display, get a bug’s-eye perspective with three larger-than-life installations inside and around our 8,000 square foot, glass-enclosed Dickinson Family Education Conservatory. Featuring multiple Sarracenia Trumpets, a walk-in Fanged Pitcher Plant Nepenthes, and a moving, interactive Venus Flytrap, all installations are constructed with aluminum and resin offering incredible interpretations of these unique plants.
