Jon Batiste is a five-time Grammy® Award-winning and Academy Award-winning singer, songwriter and composer. Batiste released his eighth studio album, "Beethoven Blues (Batiste Piano Series, Vol. 1)," in November 2024 via Verve Records/Interscope. Marking the first installment in his new solo piano series, the project showcases Batiste’s interpolations of some of Beethoven’s most iconic works, reimagined through an expansive lens. These reimagined classics embody the indomitable spirit of the blues, and – true to Batiste’s “message of open-armed inclusivity” (New York Times) – embrace a broad genre spectrum. "Beethoven Blues (Batiste Piano Series, Vol. 1)" follows "World Music Radio" (released August 2023 via Verve), which draws inspiration from Batiste’s mission to create community and expand culture with the power of music. Featuring collaborators including Jon Bellion, Lana Del Rey, Lil’ Wayne and more, the album received positive reviews from critics who praised the project for its universal message and genre-defying sound. Hailed by NPR as “a sprawling exploration of what global music can sound like,” the album received a total of five Grammy® nominations, including "Album of the Year." Batiste kicked off his first-ever headlining tour, "Uneasy Tour: Purifying the Airwaves for the People," the following year. Batiste’s innovative score is featured in Jason Reitman’s Saturday Night, which was released in theaters in October 2024. Nearly half of Balboa Park’s 450+ species of trees come from Australia and New Zealand. This tour provides an overview of the park’s collection of trees from down under, which includes a variety of gums, wattles, bottlebrushes, paperbarks, and banksias. We will discuss why we have so many in the park, their unusual properties, how they are able to survive so far from their native habitats, and why some are regarded as the most valuable trees in San Diego. Forever Balboa Park offers thematic park tours that focus on the park’s unique biodiversity and highlight the park’s horticultural wonders on the first Saturday of each month. Led by park volunteer and horticultural enthusiast Bill Edwards, the free tours leave from the Visitors Center at 10:00 a.m. unless otherwise indicated. Walks last 90 minutes and are typically less than 1 mile on level terrain. It is advised that potential attendees contact the Balboa Park Visitors Center prior to the scheduled walk to determine if there are any last-minute changes or cancellations to the tours. Casa Familiar is proud to announce the opening of a new art exhibition which explores artisanal practices, traditions and crafts that have been passed from person to person through generations. The exhibition, titled “Infinite Rivers" opens July 12 and runs through Sept. 13, 2025. An opening reception will be held July 12 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., at The FRONT Gallery in San Ysidro (147W San Ysidro Blvd, San Ysidro, 92173). Indigenous artists from the Kumeyaay community, Chemehuevi, Zapotec, Huichol, Taraumara communities, as well as artists from San Diego and Tijuana, Lebanon and Colombia, will participate in this exhibition. Their works show that while artisanal practices and traditions are passed down through generations, sometimes those traditions are kept intact for thousands of years, and sometimes they are in constant evolution. The artist Andrea Echeverri, from Colombia, better known for her music project “Los Aterciopelados," will be showing some of her ceramic creations and will be at the opening reception to share a little bit about their new album. Francisco Eme, gallery director at The FRONT Arte & Cultura, curated the exhibition. “In the face of emerging technologies, addiction to screens, mass produced objects, and annihilation of cultural practices, keeping crafting traditions alive seems like an impossible endeavor,” said Eme. “'Infinite Rivers' invites us to appreciate these practices from a caring and culturally conscious approach.” The Front Arte & Cultura on Facebook / Instagram
