Philippe on Saturday, May 20, 2023 at 5 p.m. at the Mosaic Building 113 in the North Torrey Pines Living and Learning Neighborhood. About the Film: The films of David Lynch and "The Wizard of Oz" have held a mirror to each other for decades. "Lynch/Oz" explores one of the most fascinating puzzles in the history of motion pictures: the enduring symbiosis between America’s primordial fairytale and David Lynch’s singular brand of popular surrealism. About Alexandre O. Philippe: Swiss-American filmmaker Alexandre O. Philippe has written and directed numerous award-winning films and documentaries, many of which take on the role of unpacking the most influential works of master filmmakers. His most recent film, "78/52: Hitchcock’s Shower Scene," is a documentary about Alfred Hitchcock’s iconic shower scene from Psycho. The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and screened extensively at festivals before its release by IFC Films. The documentary explores the intangible cinematic space between the shots and delves into Hitchcock’s genius in unprecedented fashion. It is the first feature-length investigation into the art, craft, and influence of a single extraordinary scene. Philippe holds a master’s degree in dramatic writing from New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts and is creative director at Exhibit A Pictures. Other past works include "Doc of the Dead," "The People vs. George Lucas," and an ongoing series of short films for The Criterion Collection titled "Double Exposure." Over the years, he has conducted numerous film analyses and written seminars at schools, universities, film festivals, and museums around the world, featuring in-depth deconstructions of classic and contemporary films. Philippe has also served on several film-festival juries, including the Edinburgh International Film Festival, Rome Film Festival, and New Zealand Film Awards. From the theater: The extraordinary life of the champion Billie Jean King. "Love All" is the triumphant story of the rise of sports icon and social justice pioneer Billie Jean King. The trailblazer for equality faced tough competition on the court and adversity in the world, all against a backdrop of the massive social changes of the 1960s and 70s. With the support of Billie Jean King herself, this exciting world premiere comes from the pen of award-winning playwright, professor, actor and author Anna Deavere Smith (whose screen roles include The West Wing and Nurse Jackie). Deavere Smith’s artistry is evidenced by the groundbreaking work that she has created for more than four decades, including the Tony-Award nominated Twilight: Los Angeles, 1992. Under the skillful hand of director Marc Bruni (director of the Tony, Grammy and Olivier Award winning Beautiful: The Carole King Musical), "Love All" evokes the highs and lows of Billie Jean’s extraordinary career, and asks not just what it takes to be a champion, but what it takes to change the course of history. ARTISTS: Steve Hackman, conductor/creator San Diego Symphony Orchestra About the concert: Tchaikovsky X. Drake is a symphonic synthesis that blends the music of two composer-romanticists separated by almost a century. Twenty-two songs of Drake are woven into Piotr Tchaikovsky’s epic Fifth Symphony, as the lyrics of the former serve to advance the narrative program of the latter. We hear Drake’s melodies soaring in tandem with Tchaikovsky’s; his raps motoring almost impossibly with Tchaikovsky’s rhythmic figures; then vignettes of Drake’s music with Tchaikovsky’s motives and melodies superimposed over the top. Every possibility of synthesis is joyfully and beautifully explored. Joining the full symphony orchestra are three singers, one rapper, a drummer and a bassist; the piece truly alternates between a romantic orchestral sound and a contemporary hip-hop/classical fusion. The annual Sam Hinton Folk Heritage Festival celebrates the memory of Sam Hinton, the grandfather of folk music in San Diego County. Admission is free and all are welcome. There will be music on the gazebo, storytelling in the Porter House, and jam sessions of various flavors around the park. The Poway-Midland Railroad will be offering rides around the park for a nominal fee (which supports the nonprofit organization that runs and maintains the trains). Presented by San Diego Folk Heritage. Explore the stories of women activists, artists, politicians, and everyday woman of the LGBT movement from the 1960s through today.
