This festive event is the perfect way to kick off the holiday season with an evening full of magic, community spirit, and holiday cheer. This year’s celebration will feature a vibrant holiday market coordinated by Las Jefas Market, showcasing a curated selection of hand-crafted gifts. Guests can enjoy live music, delicious food and drinks from local vendors, fun activities for kids, and of course, a special chance to take a photo with Santa. The highlight of the evening will be the official tree lighting ceremony at 6:45 p.m., where the East Village Association will be joined by San Diego’s elected officials to unveil a brand-new holiday tree, bringing a fresh sparkle to this beloved tradition. A West Coast Premiere A Hybrid Staged Reading - One Night Only "White Privilege" by Malaina Moore is a powerful and provocative theatrical examination of race, privilege, and systemic injustice in America. Structured as a series of intersecting vignettes, the play gives voice to both the ignorance that sustains oppression and the lived realities of those most harmed by it. Through satire, raw testimony, historical reckoning, and searing dialogue, "White Privilege" dismantles the myths of “colorblindness,” exposes the violence of cultural appropriation and gentrification, and confronts the generational trauma of anti-Black racism. By weaving together classroom dynamics, therapy sessions, media narratives, and direct address to the audience, Moore forces us to question not only what privilege is—but how it operates in daily life, institutions, and history. At once deeply personal and urgently political, "White Privilege" is a necessary work of theatre that challenges audiences to move beyond denial and toward accountability. Projects, subjects, and materials shift each week, so returning campers will enjoy fresh challenges. This allows returning campers to deepen their skills while creating entirely new artwork! WHAT TO EXPECT Campers will learn foundational art skills like drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpting, and mixed media while also building confidence, problem-solving skills, and creative independence. Activities include drawing cartoons with a professional cartoon artist, designing and building cardboard “automatic machines” inspired by the "Aaron Kramer: Sense of Wonder" exhibition, creating custom prints on tote bags inspired by the "Matrix Multiplied: Hybrid Approaches to Printmaking exhibition," plein air watercolor painting, collaborative mural-making, beach sketching, mixed media collage, and more. Beyond art techniques, campers practice observation, creative thinking, collaboration, and expressing their ideas visually. OMA's galleries are our inspiration labs, and every project encourages experimentation and trying something new (there’s no “right way” here!) Each day includes a walk to the Oceanside Public Library (OPL) where free lunch is provided by the Lunch at the Library program if needed, otherwise kids can bring their lunch from home. The Saps at Sea, the San Diego Laurel and Hardy club, is hosting the 24th International convention of the Sons of the Desert, the International Laurel and Hardy Appreciation Society. Our theme is the centennial of Stan and Ollie working as a team, starting in 1926. Convention Chairman Dave Greim is organizing four fun days -- including film screenings, presentations, games, a trivia contest, two authors panels, 5 meals, a bus trip to Old Town, tour of the USS Midway, and a dinner cruise in San Diego Harbor. Our big banquet will feature a salute to the Veterans and period music by the famous Dean Mora Orchestra, which specializes in 1920s and 30s jazz and dance music. Our special guest is Cassidy Cook, the great-granddaughter of Stan Laurel. Passes are available for the full convention or individual events. A special theatrical show June 23 will feature Laurel and Hardy restorations, silent and sound. Local musician Russ Peck, will accompany the silent movies on a full size organ. On Saturday, April 18, 2026, from Noon to 8 p.m., Lionel’s Legacy Senior Dog Rescue is hosting its first CANINE CARNIVAL at its historic rock house facility at 11937 Woodside Avenue in Lakeside, California 92040! It’s a daytime event at the Shelter Slumber “Pawty!” Come for the day – no sleepover necessary. The Carnival kicks off at noon with a free ice cream event. Then there will be a host of different events throughout the day, including: • Dog-themed Music Bingo • Cornhole Tournament • Paw Painting & Pet Art • Photo Booth • Line Dancing • Inflatable Costume Race • And more! ADOPTION ALLEY: A highlight includes the adoptable dog showcase from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m., when you can meet our amazing dogs who are looking for their forever home! Free activities are available, but most events require a donation ($5-$15) that goes directly to Lionel’s Legacy so they can continue to care for their senior dogs. Life transitions, like moving to a new home, can also make families worry that their beloved senior pet may not adjust well. While Lionel’s Legacy rescues senior dogs, our ultimate goal is to help cherished pets remain where they belong: safely and lovingly with their families whenever possible.
