"From the Ground Up: A History of Local Queer Activism" chronicles the rich legacy of LGBTQ+ organizing in San Diego, showcasing the foundational work of trans and BIPOC queer activists who built the movement from grassroots efforts. The exhibit features historical artifacts, personal narratives, and archival materials that document key organizing campaigns, including the local ACT UP chapter's fight during the AIDS crisis and other pivotal moments in the community's ongoing struggle for justice and equality. Visitors will discover how local activists created networks of support, challenged discriminatory policies, and established the infrastructure that continues to serve San Diego's queer community today. Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day, Jubilee Day, and Liberation Day, is an American holiday celebrated annually on June 19. It is the oldest, national commemoration of the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in the U.S. This year marks the 157th anniversary of when Union Major General Gordon Granger landed at Galveston, Texas, with the news that the Civil War ended and that enslaved people were now free. This announcement was more than two and a half years after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation. Juneteenth offers each of us the opportunity to acknowledge hard truths from U.S. history, celebrate the liberation of the enslaved ancestors of African Americans, and work together to advance racial healing, equity, and justice in our communities. The NAACP has hosted the North San Diego County Juneteenth for over 55 years. This year is particularly notable with it designated as a federal holiday after over 156 years of its existence. The Navy SEAL Museum San Diego is set to open on October 4. It marks an expansion of the National UDT-Navy SEAL Museum into a region where Navy SEALs are a unique part of the character, yet lacked a dedicated museum until now. Once open, the Museum aims to inspire visitors to serve a cause higher than themselves. Through one-on-one engagement with NSMSD’s docent corps of retired NSW operators, visitors will gain an appreciation for the sacrifice shared by all military personnel and take aboard the timeless values of teamwork, dedication, innovation, perseverance to employ in their own lives.
