In this talk, Anamaria Labao Cabato, Executive Director of the Philippine Performing Arts Company (PASACAT), will share an overview of the regions of the Philippines and their respective cultures through dance, music, and textiles. Anamaria will also discuss PASACAT’s partnership with Mingei and its upcoming Community Spotlight installation, which will be on view outside the Museum from mid-December through mid-January. About Anamaria Cabato Anamaria Cabato is the Executive Director of PASACAT, where she has served since its founding in 1970, first as a dancer, musician, and vocalist before stepping into leadership in 1983. A San Diego State University graduate with a B.S. in Business Administration, Cabato discovered her cultural identity through Philippine dance, inspiring her lifelong dedication to promoting Filipino arts and heritage. She has been recognized for her leadership and community service with honors such as the KFMB-TV 8 Cares Award and the Ladies of Elegance Award. In 2021, she co-chaired the "Filipinos of South Bay" exhibit at the Chula Vista Library, highlighting the migration and history of San Diego’s Filipino community. Join us for a creative-critical exploration of Yiddish poetry, where language, history and the imagination meet. We will study the works of great poets, and take inspiration from them to create new works. Our journey will take us through traditional verse as well as avant-garde experimentation, covering sound poetry, Oulipo constraints and multilingual wordplay. This course is designed for students who have already studied Yiddish for a term (or equivalent), and for speakers who can read and understand basic Yiddish, but it can be enjoyed by speakers of all levels looking to grow their Yiddish creativity. By the end of the six-week course, students will have a deeper appreciation for poetic craft in Yiddish, and develop a poem of their own. All materials will be provided by the instructor. He has studied Yiddish at University College London, and courses in Tel Aviv, Berlin and Paris. He has led Yiddish poetry courses online for Babel’s Blessing Language School and in-person workshops at the Shtetl Berlin Festival, the Maison de la Culture Yiddish and the Yiddish Sof-Vokh UK, which he also helps to organise. He teaches at the summer programme ‘Ot Azoy’ and recently completed a pedagogy fellowship at the Yiddish Book Center (Amherst, MA). Join us at the UC San Diego Conrad Prebys Concert Hall to celebrate Women's History Month! kallisti vocal ensemble presents a concert of rarely heard vocal chamber music from across the span of several generations. Among those represented on the program are Russian composer Sofia Gubaidulina, whose music earned international recognition, as well as an intricate, delicate acapella duet by Swiss composer Katharina Rosenberg. A new generation of American composers is also featured on the program, including Kate Soper's iconic "Only the words themselves mean what they say" for voice and flute, along with duets for voice and doublebass by Lila Meretzky and 2025 Guggenheim Fellow Katherine Balch. The concert also features Swedish composer Karin Rehnqvist's "Puksånger/Lockrup" for two voices and percussion. A tour de force for both singers, Rehnqvist's twenty-minute work incorporates traditional Swedish folk singing and herding-calls, and is set to texts that speak to the experiences of women of all times. The kallisti concert features UC San Diego graduate students in Contemporary Music Performance: vocalists Emily Barger, Julia Anne Cordani, flutist Leanna Keith, double bassist Andrew Crapitto, along with pianist Kyle Adam Blair and guest artist Christopher Clarino, percussion. kallisti was founded in 2009 by Distinguished Professor of Music Susan Narucki and has presented innovative chamber operas and vocal chamber music over the past seventeen years.
