  • Casa de Amparo’s 28th Annual Meet the Chefs event will bring together nearly 300 food enthusiasts and San Diego's finest chefs for an unforgettable culinary experience on Sunday, April 13, 2025, at the Hilton Del Mar. This highly anticipated event, which raises over $150,000 annually, supports Casa de Amparo’s transformative programs for foster youth in San Diego County. This year, a new addition to the event will be the Pre-Event Reception, starting at 1 p.m. Guests will enjoy hors d’oeuvres from Pamplemousse Grille, along with fine wines and champagne provided by Vinera Wine Society. The reception will feature a silent auction and exclusive wine auction, allowing attendees to bid on rare, curated selections before the Chef’s Tastings event begins at 2:30 p.m. The main event will include unlimited tastings from premier local chefs, a live auction, and live music, all set poolside at the Hilton Del Mar.   • Sundays, April 27 & May 4, 2 p.m. - 5 p.m. Steam bending wood is an efficient and environmentally-friendly process that has been used for hundreds of years in the construction of chairs, boats, tools, and countless other wooden objects. In this workshop, students will learn the fundamental process of steam bending wood, from wood selection and preparation, to the actual bending and drying process. Through demonstrations and hands-on exercises, students will each make their own steam-bent flower vase to take home. Materials are included. Students are asked to wear/bring long-sleeved clothing and a pair of thermal or heavy gloves. These are the instructor’s favorite gloves. Ages 18 and up. No experience necessary.   • The Coronado Philharmonia Orchestra presents a violin and harp duet, on Friday, April 21 at 1 p.m. Ciara Dabkoswski (violin) and Stefan Wendel (harp) will be playing "Saint-Saens' Fantaisie" for Violin & Harp, "Piazzolla's Histoire du Tango", and "Kreutzer-Boscha's Nocturne No.1" in Bb. Stefan Wendel and Ciara Dabkowski are a violin and harp duo from San Diego, CA. They met playing for the Villa Musica Summer Orchestra in 2016 and regularly perform together in various ensembles, including the Coronado Philharmonia, City Ballet Orchestra, and La Jolla Symphony. Stefan received his degree in harp performance from the Royal Academy of Music in London and now serves as principal harpist with the City Ballet Orchestra while pursuing a graduate degree in Mathematics. Ciara received her degree in Mathematics from UCSD and in addition to her career as a software engineer, serves as orchestra manager and librarian for both the City Ballet Orchestra and Villa Musica Summer Orchestra.   • Learn to wet felt a gorgeous flower! Saturday, May 10, 9 a.m. - 12 p.m. Join this 3-hour workshop and learn the ancient art of wet felting — the process of loose wool becoming felt. This textile art technique has been used in the making of rugs, homes (yurts) and clothing for centuries. In this workshop, the instructor will guide you, step by step, through the making of a felted flower. Starting with a soft merino wool, you will be creating your own one-of-a-kind flower choosing from a wide selection of dyed wool. After using soap and water to bind the fibers, you will take home a forever flower that will embellish any space. Your flower can be used as a bookmark, tied around a curtain or the strap of a hand bag, placed in a vase or given as a sweet gift…. The possibilities are endless! No experience necessary.   • Tuesdays, May 6, 13, 20, 6 p.m. - 8 p.m. Absolute Beginner Crochet: Getting Starting! In this crochet workshop, students will learn the fundamental skills of crochet, including starting a project, basic stitches like single crochet (sc), half double crochet (hdc), double crochet (dc), chain (ch) magic circle, and tying off. This three-week course will allow students to learn and practice the basics in-studio, practice at home, and then return with their questions and learn more. No experience necessary. Students are welcome to bring their own yarn and/or hook, but it is not necessary. We will be using size 4 yarn and between 4.00mm and 6.00mm crochet hooks. You don’t have to bring your own supplies but you are welcome to. All materials included.   • In this class you will make a gorgeous, shaped belt bag perfect for your own adventures or gifting. The skills taught in this class include: how to sew darts; sewing a lined welt zip; bias binding; and bag hardware installation. This bag is highly customizable. You will go home with the pattern and ready to practice new bag making skills. An alternative to the webbing strap could be repurposing an old belt, or from a bag you no longer use. Thrift stores are full of interesting belts and hardware to harvest from bags! This class is appropriate for a sewer with knowledge of how to use a sewing machine and sewing basics. If you’re not sure if you’re ready for this class, email and ask any questions you might have beforehand. If you are new to sewing, please check out our beginner classes before enrolling. If you are bringing your own sewing machine, it is very important to make sure it is fully functional. The bag pattern is the Nikola Pouch by Liberty Crossroads.   • Learn to needle felt! Saturday, May 3, 9 a.m. - 12 p.m. Learn to create simple sea pebbles from humble wool! Using wool, you will learn and practice needle felting techniques, feeling the cloud of fibers taking body and turning into a beautiful object. Each student will make an assortment of sea pebbles, in different tones, shapes and sizes. They make a lovely decoration, lucky stones, or tokens of friendship! In this class you will learn about wool, how to use different size needles, and felting safety (guards will be supplied for use), as we embark in the meditative process of felting, rounding edges, smoothing angles, and adding delicate veins to make your own personal trompe-l’oeil stones. No experience necessary. Ages 12+ welcome.
