Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day, Jubilee Day, and Liberation Day, is an American holiday celebrated annually on June 19. It is the oldest, national commemoration of the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in the U.S. This year marks the 157th anniversary of when Union Major General Gordon Granger landed at Galveston, Texas, with the news that the Civil War ended and that enslaved people were now free. This announcement was more than two and a half years after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation. Juneteenth offers each of us the opportunity to acknowledge hard truths from U.S. history, celebrate the liberation of the enslaved ancestors of African Americans, and work together to advance racial healing, equity, and justice in our communities. The NAACP has hosted the North San Diego County Juneteenth for over 55 years. This year is particularly notable with it designated as a federal holiday after over 156 years of its existence. Highlights of this year's event promote the importance of education, contributions, and achievement. The Navy SEAL Museum San Diego is set to open on October 4. It marks an expansion of the National UDT-Navy SEAL Museum into a region where Navy SEALs are a unique part of the character, yet lacked a dedicated museum until now. Once open, the Museum aims to inspire visitors to serve a cause higher than themselves. Through one-on-one engagement with NSMSD’s docent corps of retired NSW operators, visitors will gain an appreciation for the sacrifice shared by all military personnel and take aboard the timeless values of teamwork, dedication, innovation, perseverance to employ in their own lives. Held every summer since 1998, the Carlsbad Village Association’s Art in the Village will return on Sunday, June 22 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. for its 27th year! This one-day, open-air art show brings together 150 local and regional fine artists for a dynamic, coastal-influenced art show. All artwork is juried guaranteeing excellent quality in a wide variety of mediums including oil, watercolor, mixed media, digital, glasswork, photography, woodworking, jewelry, pottery, sculpture, and more. Patrons can interact with the artists in their booths, and all artwork on display is for purchase. Celebrating the dynamic art culture in Carlsbad Village and the surrounding areas, this annual event attracts approximately 10,000 art enthusiasts each year. Starting at 10 a.m., just two blocks from Carlsbad State Beach, attendees can browse vibrant exhibits and meet the artists along State Street and Grand Avenue. Art in the Village also features: • Three musical acts, including live performance art on the State Street Main Stage. • Local sidewalk musicians playing throughout the venue during the day. • Live glassblowing by Barrio Glassworks. • Sculpting with live models by Lieu de Sculpture. • Chalk Zone with live painting by multiple local and regional artists. • Free art making pavilion for children and their families, called "Pop-Up Art: An Interactive Encounter," operated by the City of Carlsbad Cultural Arts. • Face painting for kids.
