Recovery is not a drag! Lambda Uptown Alano Club, a San Diego non-profit organization benefiting people in recovery, invites you attend its first annual Recovery Royalty event on February 13th, 2025. It is an amateur drag and talent competition highlighting local talent, modeled after other popular events put on by various LGBTQ+ fundraising communities, such as Imperial Court, Leather Community, and Bear Community. Performers for this event must be in recovery. Audience members and a panel of judges will vote on a grand prize winner based on the performances. The grand prize winner will gain the honor of becoming the esteemed reigning member of Recovery Royalty for 2025, complete with all the wonderful accessories of a queen: a sash, a septor, and, of course, a crown! They will also have the ability to perform in future galas put on by Lambda, and gain the opportunity to organize a fundraising event for the community in 2025. Emcee’d by Luxe Versace, a sober drag artist and a keystone member of San Diego’s LGBTQ+ recovery community, the event will also feature raffle prizes, a silent auction, and a win-a-date auction in which guests will bid to date a member of Royalty. Food and drinks will be provided by local restaurants and The Rail. Lambda Uptown Alano Club was founded by Julia Nava and Heather Paetow, a couple on a mission to create a safe place for LGBTQ+ members of the recovery community in San Diego. Unfortunately, the original Alano club in Hillcrest closed due COVID and rent increases in 2021. World Kamishibai Forum February 15-16, 2025 A Free Event for educators, Librarians, storytellers, Kamishibai fans and the Kamishibai curious! The World Kamishibai Forum will bring together and celebrate the diversity of Kamishibai performance styles from around the world. Librarians, teachers and storytellers will have the opportunity to learn from internationally recognized Kamishibai experts. The two days will encompass “How to” workshops and Kamishibai storytelling and presentations. Attendees will experience how Kamishibai inspires and teaches children to love storytelling and literature. Kamishibai is a traditional Japanese storytelling and performance art that uses illustrated paper cards and a narrator. The word kamishibai literally translates to "paper theater" in Japanese. Kamishibai (Storybox) brings international folk tales and other stories to life for people, from toddlers to teens and beyond. Enjoy pirate themed pool activities and games during the City of Carlsbad’s annual Pirate Plunge event. Come dressed in a swimsuit and enjoy the swashbuckling activities which include diving for treasure, ship raider race, walking the plank, and other fun pool activities and floating obstacles. The Splash Pad will also be open for the little ones. Dry activities include a pirate ship slide, a photo op and a treasure hunt where children will have the chance to follow a map around the decks collecting treasure along the way. Tickets are $15 per person and kids ages 3 and under are free but still need to be registered. Over The Line (OTL) World Championship Over-the-Line (OTL) is a unique beach softball game that originated in San Diego. In this game, two teams of three players each compete to hit the ball over a line about 55 feet in front of the batter. Unlike traditional softball, OTL is played without bases, and the team that scores the most runs wins. The Old Mission Beach Athletic Club (OMBAC) hosts the annual World Championship Over-the-Line Tournament, which takes place on Fiesta Island in Mission Bay. The tournament is held over two weekends in July and attracts hundreds of thousands of players and spectators worldwide. It has been a San Diego tradition for 70 years and is known for its carefree, daytime, adults-only atmosphere. Teams dress up in costumes and bring tents, chairs, beer, and hilarious signs to the beach for the event.
