Join us for our upcoming Compost Giveaway Event! This event is available for City of San Diego residents only! Have you ever wondered what happens after you toss yard trimmings and food scraps into your green bin? The organic waste is collected and brought to the Miramar Greenery (located at the Miramar Landfill) where it is turned into compost! This compost is available at no cost to residents of the City of San Diego and can be picked up during normal business hours. To increase opportunities for residents to pick up compost, I Love A Clean San Diego and the City of San Diego are partnering to host Compost Giveaways on select weekends. Get your hands on some nutrient-rich compost for your garden at no cost. Whether you’re a seasoned gardener or just starting out, this event is perfect for anyone looking to give their plants a boost. Swing by and grab some compost to help your garden thrive! Things to bring: - Shovel - Gloves - Containers - Tarp and bungees for truck beds (ALL TRUCK BEDS MUST BE COVERED!) Things to know: - Be prepared to self load compost - All participants are required to sign a release waiver Please be aware, in order to collect compost you are required to sign a waiver. All participants will need to sign a waiver upon entering the event. About the Miramar Greenery: At the Miramar Greenery, compost is made from yard trimmings and food scraps that have been ground, placed in windrows, turned and watered for 70 days. During this time, microorganisms digest the carbon and nitrogen rich mixture, causing the windrow to sustain temperatures of 140-165 F. This process eliminates most weed seeds and pathogens while breaking down the organic material into beneficial soil nutrients. Finished compost is screened to a particle size of one-half inch or less which also removes film plastic from the final product. In San Diego, where soil lacks many essential plant nutrients, mixing compost in with the soil is one of the best things you can do for your yard and garden. The Coronado Philharmonia Orchestra presents a violin and harp duet, on Friday, April 21 at 1 p.m. Ciara Dabkoswski (violin) and Stefan Wendel (harp) will be playing "Saint-Saens' Fantaisie" for Violin & Harp, "Piazzolla's Histoire du Tango", and "Kreutzer-Boscha's Nocturne No.1" in Bb. Stefan Wendel and Ciara Dabkowski are a violin and harp duo from San Diego, CA. They met playing for the Villa Musica Summer Orchestra in 2016 and regularly perform together in various ensembles, including the Coronado Philharmonia, City Ballet Orchestra, and La Jolla Symphony. Stefan received his degree in harp performance from the Royal Academy of Music in London and now serves as principal harpist with the City Ballet Orchestra while pursuing a graduate degree in Mathematics. Ciara received her degree in Mathematics from UCSD and in addition to her career as a software engineer, serves as orchestra manager and librarian for both the City Ballet Orchestra and Villa Musica Summer Orchestra. This textile art technique has been used in the making of rugs, homes (yurts) and clothing for centuries. In this workshop, the instructor will guide you, step by step, through the making of a felted flower. Starting with a soft merino wool, you will be creating your own one-of-a-kind flower choosing from a wide selection of dyed wool. After using soap and water to bind the fibers, you will take home a forever flower that will embellish any space. Your flower can be used as a bookmark, tied around a curtain or the strap of a hand bag, placed in a vase or given as a sweet gift…. The possibilities are endless! No experience necessary. Tuesdays, May 6, 13, 20, 6 p.m. - 8 p.m. Absolute Beginner Crochet: Getting Starting! In this crochet workshop, students will learn the fundamental skills of crochet, including starting a project, basic stitches like single crochet (sc), half double crochet (hdc), double crochet (dc), chain (ch) magic circle, and tying off. This three-week course will allow students to learn and practice the basics in-studio, practice at home, and then return with their questions and learn more. No experience necessary. Students are welcome to bring their own yarn and/or hook, but it is not necessary. We will be using size 4 yarn and between 4.00mm and 6.00mm crochet hooks. You don’t have to bring your own supplies but you are welcome to. All materials included. In this class you will make a gorgeous, shaped belt bag perfect for your own adventures or gifting. The skills taught in this class include: how to sew darts; sewing a lined welt zip; bias binding; and bag hardware installation. This bag is highly customizable. You will go home with the pattern and ready to practice new bag making skills. An alternative to the webbing strap could be repurposing an old belt, or from a bag you no longer use. Thrift stores are full of interesting belts and hardware to harvest from bags! This class is appropriate for a sewer with knowledge of how to use a sewing machine and sewing basics. If you’re not sure if you’re ready for this class, email and ask any questions you might have beforehand. If you are new to sewing, please check out our beginner classes before enrolling. If you are bringing your own sewing machine, it is very important to make sure it is fully functional. The bag pattern is the Nikola Pouch by Liberty Crossroads. Learn to needle felt! Saturday, May 3, 9 a.m. - 12 p.m. Learn to create simple sea pebbles from humble wool! Using wool, you will learn and practice needle felting techniques, feeling the cloud of fibers taking body and turning into a beautiful object. Each student will make an assortment of sea pebbles, in different tones, shapes and sizes. They make a lovely decoration, lucky stones, or tokens of friendship! In this class you will learn about wool, how to use different size needles, and felting safety (guards will be supplied for use), as we embark in the meditative process of felting, rounding edges, smoothing angles, and adding delicate veins to make your own personal trompe-l’oeil stones. No experience necessary. Ages 12+ welcome.
