  • Learn to weave on a Tapestry Loom! Saturdays, February 22, March 1 & 8, from 9:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. Have you always been intrigued by beautiful handwoven textiles, wanted to understand how they were made, and maybe learn this ancient craft? Then this is a class for you. In this 3-day workshop (over three weeks), you will be introduced to the age-old practice of weaving and discover the rewarding aspect of creating objects for useful or decorative purpose. Weaving can also be a meditative parenthesis in our fast-paced world. You will learn the basic weaving techniques needed to set you on your weaver’s journey such as: – How to warp a tapestry loom – Plain tapestry weave (single and double weft tapestry) – Weft interlock and slit weave – Weft-faced color blending – Turkish knots (if we have sufficient time). We will weave a sampler and a final project representing different learned techniques. Students will work on a vertical tapestry loom (18”×24”) which can be taken home each week to practice and work on the project assigned. A variety of yarn will be available. Students are welcome to bring their own yarn, as well as a heavy metal fork to use as beater to pack the weft threads down. A security deposit of $50 will be required at the beginning of the class for the loan of the loom during the duration of the class.   • Learn to Warp & Weave! February 8, from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. (w/1 hr lunch break) Learn the ancient fiber craft of weaving your own fabric using a sustainably harvested wooden Rigid Heddle Loom and soft natural fibers. In his hands-on workshop, instructor Jeanine Ertl will teach you everything you need to know to warp and weave on your own. This class is perfect for anyone who’s been curious about weaving beyond a lap loom and wants to learn the warping and weaving processes. We’ll dive into fiber & fabric and demystify the process of getting set up (otherwise known as warping a loom), weaving, and finally, finishing and removing a woven fiber good from the loom! And, you’ll go home with handwoven fabric in-hand. Length of the final piece will depend on the individual’s own pace. In this workshop you’ll learn: * How a Rigid Heddle Loom works; * How to Plan a Textile (e.g. sett, basic pattern & choosing fiber, etc.) * How to Warp a Rigid Heddle; * How to Weave; * How to Remove your Woven; * And, How to Finish a freshly Handwoven Textile.   • The San Diego Civil War Round Table is hosting a “Show and Tell” program where buffs are invited, for example, to present a book review of their favorite campaign narrative or a travelogue about an especially fulfilling battlefield visit. We also certainly invite descendants to talk about their Civil War ancestors. Amateur historians may even wish to highlight some interesting fact uncovered in research. And if you have a non-lethal antique, such as a uniform button, belt buckle, or kepi, we would very much like to see and hear about it.   • Witness the Annual Winter Journey of the Pacific gray whale. Each winter, the Pacific gray whales pass by the western overlooks of Cabrillo National Monument--San Diego's only national park. After spending the summer feeding in the food-rich waters of the Arctic, the whales swim south along the coast to the bays of Baja California, where they mate and nurse their young. Along the way, they pass Point Loma and Cabrillo National Monument, where you can witness their annual winter journey. Once nearly hunted into extinction, these majestic animal populations are now considered close to their pre-exploitation numbers. Mid-January is the peak time for their migration.
