Carmen Winant is a Professor in the Department of Art at Ohio State University, where she is the Roy Lichtenstein Chair of Studio Art, and an affiliated faculty member in Women's Gender and Sexuality Studies. Winant’s work poses a challenge to the ways that we understand women’s power, pleasure, labor, healing, and liberation to function, querying the aesthetic and political legacy of second-wave feminism. Winant’s appropriative installations and artist's books grapple with this question for all of its contradictory impulses: the awe of living in a revolutionary moment, a shared preoccupation with the female body as a zone of political strife, cognizance of the racial and class-based limitations of the second-wave movement; the mine- and not-mine nature of historical legacy. In using found photographs, Winant acts upon primary evidence (rather than indexical reference); the images incorporated into her work contend directly with the complex notion of socio-political inheritance. Winant has taught in Ohio prisons through The Ohio Prison Education Exchange Project (OPEEP) has also served as the Dean of Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture (2013-2015); and is a 2019 Guggenheim fellow in photography. The spring series opens on Thursday, March 27, at Scripps Research with a long-anticipated local debut as a leader of acclaimed Cuban composer-pianist-bandleader Omar Sosa and his Quarteto Americanos, featuring Josh Jones on drums, Ernesto Mazar Kindelán on bass, and Sheldon Brown on sax, clarinet, and flute. Sosa is widely celebrated as one of the most versatile jazz artists on the scene today. His musical trajectory traces the African diaspora from Cuba to Brazil; from Central America to Ecuador’s African-descent communities; from San Francisco and New York to his current home base in Barcelona. True to his Afro-Cuban origins, Sosa fashions a spirited vision of uncompromising artistic generosity that embraces humanity at large. Nominated for seven Grammy awards and twice for the BBC World Music Awards, Sosa received a lifetime achievement award from the Smithsonian Associates in Washington, D.C., for his contribution to the development of Latin jazz in the United States. The series continues on Wednesday, April 9, at Scripps Research with the Bill Frisell Trio, featuring Frisell on guitar, Thomas Morgan on bass, and Rudy Royston on drums. Frisell’s career as a guitarist and composer has spanned more than 40 years and many celebrated recordings. Recognized as one of America’s most vital and productive performing artists, Frisell has contributed to the work of a staggering array of collaborators, including Paul Motian, John Zorn, Elvis Costello, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Rickie Lee Jones, Vinicius Cantuária, Marianne Faithfull, John Scofield, Bono, and Brian Eno, to name only a few. This work has established Frisell as one of the most sought-after guitar voices in contemporary music. The series concludes on Thursday, April 24, at the Athenaeum with the Ben Wendel Quartet, featuring Wendel on saxophone with an all-star rhythm section of Gerald Clayton on piano, Luca Alemanno on bass, and Jonathan Pinson on drums. Grammy-nominated saxophonist Ben Wendel was born in Vancouver and raised in Los Angeles. Currently living in Brooklyn, he has enjoyed a varied career as a performer, composer, and producer. Highlights include tours, performances, and/or recordings with artists such as Terence Blanchard, Bill Frisell, Cécile McLorin Salvant, Tigran Hamasyan, Antonio Sanchez, Eric Harland, Taylor Eigsti, Linda May Han Oh, Moonchild, Louis Cole, Daedelus, Snoop Dogg, and Prince. Wendel is a founding member of the Grammy-nominated group Kneebody. His 2023 record, All One, was nominated for a Grammy in the Best Contemporary Instrumental Album category. About this Program The attack on Israel by Hamas on Oct. 7, 2023 opened a new chapter in the turbulence history of the post-Ottoman Levant. A low-grade war between Hezbollah in Lebanon and Israel begun on Oct. 8, 2023 exploded in September 2024 with devastating effect on both Hezbollah and the Lebanese population and infrastructure. Shifting power balances in the Levant and beyond contributed to the unexpectedly sudden collapse of the seeming impregnable Assad regime after 14 years of civil war. To understand the outlines of any potential emerging orders in Syria and Lebanon it is crucial to understand the history and forces driving today’s fragmented, yet interrelated Levant. Michael Provence, a specialist in modern middle eastern history, will present via Zoom the broad historical context in which recent developments in Syria & Lebanon have occurred. He will discuss the late Ottoman period, the colonial & post-colonial periods in the Levant, the emergence of Israel, the rise of Assad, the fall of Lebanon into civil war, and the emergence of Hezbollah - including its role as a proxy/client of Iran. About Michael Provence Michael Provence teaches modern Middle East history, focusing on the 20th-century Arab East. He received a B.A in History from U.C. Berkeley in 1994 and a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago in 2001. During 2017-2018 he was Chercheur Résident (Research Fellow in Residence), Institut d’Etudes Avancées de Nantes, France. In 2010-11 and 2014, Provence was an Alexander von Humboldt fellow at the Zentrum Moderner Orient in Berlin, Germany. In 2024-25, he is a visiting professor at Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne. He is the author of two books and many articles. The books are "The Great Syrian Revolt and the Rise of Arab Nationalism" (2005) and "The Last Ottoman Generation and the Making of the Modern Middle East" (2017). Both available in Arabic and Turkish. Provence lived and studied over the course of many years in several Middle Eastern countries, particularly Syria and Lebanon, between 1998 and 2006. He returns as often as possible.
