New health restrictions took effect Monday in San Diego County and the rest of Southern California, shutting down indoor service at restaurants among other closures, due to the rapidly increasing number of coronavirus hospitalizations.

Gusty Santa Ana winds and low humidity will significantly raise the risk of wildfires in the San Diego County mountains and western valleys Monday and Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service.

Sunday will be sunny and mild in San Diego County after a cold start, but another Santa Ana wind condition will hit the area Monday and Tuesday with gusty northeast winds and very low humidity in the mountains, valleys and some coastal areas, the National Weather Service said.

An earthquake struck northeast of San Diego early Sunday morning, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

This week's period of dry, gusty Santa Ana conditions has diminished in intensity, but it will continue through the weekend before being replaced by another strong one early next week.

Mayor Todd Gloria and City Council President Sean Elo-Rivera Wednesday announced an update to San Diego's climate action initiative.

The announcement comes after a judge struck down San Diego's COVID-19 vaccine mandate, saying only the state can make that a requirement.

Earlier this month, supervisors unanimously voted to oppose any further placements of sexually violent predators until local jurisdictions are able to fully participate in the placement process, including having full veto authority.
