The San Diego County Board of Supervisors Tuesday unanimously approved a resolution asking the state governor's office for more local control when it comes to further restrictions in connection with the COVID-19 pandemic.

Citing ballooning COVID-19 rates and multiple cases of the illness among students in other school districts, leaders of the San Diego Unified School District announced Tuesday they are cautiously looking to Jan. 4 for a major expansion of in-person learning.

Dry, gusty Santa Ana winds swept through the San Diego area for a second day Tuesday, raising the risk of wildfires in the mountains and inland valleys and prompting precautionary power shutoffs.

More than one-third of the county's 1.95 million voters have cast ballots. Mail-in ballots were sent to all registered voters in the county on Oct. 5, even those who had not requested one.

Elisa Serna died Nov. 11, a few days after she was booked into the county jail. Earlier this year, the sheriff's department said Serna died from complications of drug abuse, with a contributing factor of early intrauterine pregnancy.

San Diego County health officials have reported 358 new COVID-19 infections, bringing the case total to 54,941, including four new cases in the Vista Unified School District.

Mayor Todd Gloria and City Council President Sean Elo-Rivera Wednesday announced an update to San Diego's climate action initiative.

The announcement comes after a judge struck down San Diego's COVID-19 vaccine mandate, saying only the state can make that a requirement.

Earlier this month, supervisors unanimously voted to oppose any further placements of sexually violent predators until local jurisdictions are able to fully participate in the placement process, including having full veto authority.
