A spike in COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations in San Diego County has prompted officials to pause any additional reopenings through at least Aug. 1 and order all county restaurants to close at 10 p.m. starting Wednesday night.

While the airport has remained open to essential travel during the pandemic, officials said potentially eased restrictions to non-essential travel have led the airport to issue a public notice of its COVID-19 health and safety regulations.

According to Santa Monica-based Heal the Bay, 42 out of more than 500 beaches across the state earned spots on the Honor Roll, which is reserved for beaches that score grades of A+ for water quality during all seasons and weather conditions.

Margaret Hunter was slated to be sentenced next Monday, but COVID-19- related concerns led the prosecution and defense to jointly agree to postpone her sentencing until Aug. 24, "in the hope that the present public emergency will have abated" by then.

The petition, filed with the California Fish and Game Commission, notes that the Quino checkerspot was once one of the most common butterflies in Southern California. But with the rapid spread of urban sprawl, the butterfly has lost more than 75% of its historic habitat and in 1997 was listed as endangered under the federal Endangered Species Act.

Mayor Todd Gloria and City Council President Sean Elo-Rivera Wednesday announced an update to San Diego's climate action initiative.

The announcement comes after a judge struck down San Diego's COVID-19 vaccine mandate, saying only the state can make that a requirement.

Earlier this month, supervisors unanimously voted to oppose any further placements of sexually violent predators until local jurisdictions are able to fully participate in the placement process, including having full veto authority.
