Motorists heading east this weekend might have to find alternate routes, as Caltrans crews have scheduled a major freeway closure of Interstate 8 through La Mesa and El Cajon starting Friday night and ending Monday morning.

"We're doing everything possible as a public health care agency to protect the wellness and safety of our residents," board Chairwoman Nora Vargas said during the board's meeting Wednesday.

Over the next year, San Diego engineers will work with the U.S Army Corps of Engineers on finalizing an agreement for the terms of the loan.
