Science and Technology ReporterA journalist with 30 years of experience, Tom covers science and technology stories for KPBS' platforms. He joined KPBS in 1998 to cover San Diego issues related to growth, transportation, and development. He previously served as host of These Days (now KPBS Midday Edition) and as a news editor. Tom began his broadcasting career in 1988 at WSUI Radio in Iowa City as a reporter and newscaster. He then spent five years at Minnesota Public Radio (MPR) where he worked as a reporter. Following his departure from MPR, Tom was a freelance journalist, working for Twin Cities Public Television, WCCO Radio, and a variety of regional and national newspapers and magazines. He has received recognition for his outstanding work in hosting and public affairs reporting from the Unity Awards, the Northwest Broadcast News Association, and the San Diego chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists.

It’s been four years since San Diego voters rejected the nutty idea of moving their international airport to Miramar Air Station and sharing it with the Marines. But that vote of no confidence meant San Diego would still be stuck with a one-runway airport called Lindbergh Field which may someday run out of landing space. -
Many years ago I heard a jazz artist describe “hip” to a New York audience at the Village Vanguard. Sadly, I wasn’t there in person. It was part of a recording of a live performance by the Cannonball Adderley sextet. -
Today the Case-Shiller home price index came out and it looked pretty good for the San Diego market. Case-Shiller tracks housing markets in 20 cities and it showed home prices in July were up in San Diego about 9 percent from the year before.

San Diego City Hall supporters of Proposition D, the proposed half-cent sales tax hike, today announced support from a local business group. The group, called the Citizens' Fiscal Sustainability Task Force, said the City of San Diego is unlikely to be able to solve it’s structural budget deficit without the revenue boost Prop D represents.
