California Governor Jerry Brown has ordered flags above the State Capitol be lowered today in honor of Army Staff Sgt. Robert E. Thomas Jr. of Fontana. Thomas, 24, died September 13 at Brooke Army Medical Center in Texas after suffering injuries in a "non-combat related incident" on April 21, 2013, in Afghanistan.

Three Green Berets were killed September 21 in Afghanistan. Staff Sgt. Liam J. Nevins, 32, Staff Sgt. Timothy R. McGill, 30, and Spc. Joshua J. Strickland, 23, all died when they were shot by an attacker wearing an Afghan National Army uniform.

Army Spc. James T. Wickliff-Chacin, 22, died September 20 at Brooke Army Medical Center in Texas of injuries he suffered last month. On August 12, an improvised explosive device detonated near Wickliff's dismounted patrol during combat operations in Pul-E-Alam, Afghanistan, gravely wounding the young soldier.

The military is investigating the "non-combat related" death of Army Sgt. William D. Brown III, 44, in Laghman Province, Afghanistan. Brown passed away on September 19.

Indiana Army National Guard Staff Sgt. Randall R. Lane, 43, died September 13 in Kabul, Afghanistan, from a non-combat related illness.

President Barack Obama will award the Medal of Honor on October 15 to retired Army Capt. William Swenson. The Army veteran will be the sixth living recipient to be awarded the Medal of Honor for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
