Three members of the U.S. Army Special Forces were killed September 21 in Afghanistan. Staff Sgt. Liam J. Nevins, Staff Sgt. Timothy R. McGill, and Spc. Joshua J. Strickland died when they were shot by an attacker wearing an Afghan National Army uniform.
The deadly attack took place at Forward Operating Base Shank in Gardez, Paktia Province, while the soldiers were conducting range training, according to the Department of Defense.
Nevins, 32, of Denver, Colorado, was assigned to 5th Battalion, 19th Special Forces Group, Watkins, Colorado. The Denver Post reports Nevins grew up in New Hampshire. He was a special forces staff sergeant with the Colorado National Guard.
McGill, 30, of Ramsey, New Jersey, was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 19th Special Forces Group, Middletown, Rhode Island. His father, Raymond McGill, told The Star-Ledger that his 6-foot 6-inch, 280-pound son was known as a gentle giant. He was a Marine veteran who had later joined the Rhode Island National Guard:
"Everybody loved him.”
Strickland, 23, of Woodstock, Georgia, was assigned to 1st Battalion, 1st Special Forces Group, Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington.
