The Taliban has offered to exchange U.S. Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl, who has been a POW since 2009, for five detainees currently being held at Guantanamo Bay.
A Taliban spokesman exclusively told The Associated Press of the deal, and that Bergdahl “is, as far as I know, in good condition.”
Col. Tim Marsano with the Idaho National Guard reported to the A.P. that the spirits of Bergdahl’s parents, Bob and Jani Bergdahl, have been buoyed by the new information:
“They’re aware that the possibility of a transfer or exchange is on the table and they’re encouraged by it."
It's not unusual for a prisoner swap to be offered as a good faith gesture at the beginning of peace talks, according to NBC News Pentagon Correspondent Jim Miklaszewski. Earlier this week, the Obama administration announced there would be peace talks with the Taliban in the Qatari capital of Doha.
As Home Post previously reported, Bergdahl's parents received a letter this month they believe was written by their son - the first written correspondence from Bowe Bergdahl since his capture.
Bergdahl, 27, was discovered missing from his duty station in eastern Afghanistan on June 30, 2009. He was declared missing/captured three days later.
