San Diego Police Shoot Armed Man In Mission Beach

A man armed with a gun was wounded Wednesday in an officer-involved shooting near De Anza Cove, authorities reported.

San Diego police got a report of a man armed with a gun and making threats in the 2800 block of North Mission Bay Drive in Mission Beach shortly after 11 a.m., SDPD public-affairs Lt. Kevin Mayer said.

Officers tried in vain to persuade the man to drop the weapon and surrender. A standoff ensued and lasted for nearly an hour before gunfire rang out. It was not immediately clear who fired, the lieutenant said.

According to NBC San Diego's web site:

Witnesses said the man got out of a car, waved a gun around, pointed it at his head, pointed it at police officers and even pointed it up at the police helicopter.

The same witnesses said the man was shot once in what appeared to be his chest. He went down to the ground and then got up again and walked over to a shaded area where police handcuffed him.
Medics were called in to treat the suspect. His name and condition were not immediately available.

Initial reports indicated that the man might have been suicidal, Mayer said.
