In the tradition of Tolkien's "Kol-Bitar" (coal-biter) readings at Oxford, participants sit around a table and recite Beowulf from dual-language scripts. Scripts provided for all, illustrated, and with accented syllables printed in bold. An experienced poet will recite the Old English; participants will rotate reciting the Modern English, everybody taking a turn.
Mead is available from the meadery. A regular Old English/Old Norse reading group is a possibility, if there is interest. Maybe even Greek/Latin as well.
Probably too scary for little kids. Anyone involved in SCA/D&D would probably enjoy this.
Note: epic is a LONG form. If you sit with us, you're in for two hours! We should be done just as it's getting dark.
