This will be a presentation and discussion on the subject of Yiddish regional dialects, issues of language status, social identity and history of multilingualism. Using regional dialect maps of Europe as a basis the discussion will then range to uses of Yiddish in the Americas and Israel as well as in Hasidic contexts.
About the instructor: Dr. Miriam Isaacs is a scholar, writer, translator, and educator specializing in Yiddish language and culture. She is a native Yiddish speaker and has taught Yiddish courses at the University of Maryland and lectured internationally. Dr. Isaacs has given lectures and workshops for Yiddish New York, UC Berkeley, the Library of Congress, the Jewish Genealogical Society, among others.
