Andrea Mantegna (1431-1506) and Giovanni Bellini (around 1435-1516) were two major painters of the Renaissance period. From very different backgrounds, they became in-laws in 1453 when Mantegna married Bellini’s sister Nicolosia. In today’s docent-led talk, we’ll examine their two different ways of working, which, together, paved the way for modern art 500 years ago in Northern Italy. It’s a tale of two artists and brothers-in-law that tells a story of art, family, rivalry, and personality. Two brothers-in-law who took very different artistic paths.
