Virtual Talk - Early Flemish Art in the 15th and 16th Centuries

Thursday, February 22, 2024 from 11 AM to 12 PM
The Timken Museum of Art (Virtual)
All Ages
Free

This docent-led talk will explore the work of some of the most prominent Northern Renaissance painters who were active primarily in the cities of Bruges and Ghent during the 15th and 16th centuries. For example, the brilliant Jan van Eyck was one of the most prominent artists in Bruges during the 15th century. His contributions to European art were many, including the perfection of the use of oil paint and his minutely realistic depictions of surface effects and natural light. His successor, Petrus Christus was known to have introduced single point perspective. Other Northern artists such as Rogier van der Weyden and Robert Campin helped shape Northern Renaissance art through their close observations and meticulously detailed depictions of human figures and their surroundings.

The typical subject matter of the Flemish School was often religious in nature, but small beautifully executed portraits were also common. The Timken Museum is fortunate to have paintings by three of the most significant Flemish/Netherlandish painters such as Pieter Brueghel the Elder, Petrus Christus, and Pieter Claeissens the Elder. Their works and that of many prominent Flemish artists will be highlighted in this docent-led talk.
