The San Diego Early Music Society is pleased to present the San Diego debut of Ensemble La Morra, with a guest appearance by one of the great living lutenists, Nigel North. The ensemble will present a program of songs and instrumental music composed or circulating in Italy around the turn of fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. This is the time of Leonardo da Vinci, who famously wrote “Se la pittura è la definizione delle cose corporee, la musica è la figurazione delle cose invisibili” (“If painting is the definition of corporeal things, music is the figuration of invisible things"). The program will offer a selection of works that shines a light on the richly musical Italy of the time of Leonardo.
“La Morra dazzles… with exquisite delicacy” (Eduardo Torrico, Scherzo, 2022). “In North's hands…music speaks so directly that the messages implicit in so many of these pieces emerge with a clarity of poise that really draws the listener in” (James Jolly, Gramophone 2003).
