“EAST OF EDEN” (1955. 115 min. PG): James Dean’s electrifying screen debut highlights this feverishly poetic retelling of Cain and Abel. A rebellious son (Dean), along with his competitive brother, vie for the affection of their stern father (Raymond Massey). Co-starring Burl Ives, Julie Harris and Jo Van Fleet.

Cal (James Dean) and Abra (Julie Harris) have an emotional connection on the ferris wheel when, in the midst of World War 1, anti-German sentiment riles up the town.
