Have you ever attended a live podcast recording? Join podcast host Anthony Thomas for a live podcast session and conversation with special guest, teenage jazz prodigy and composer, Kahlil Childs for the podcast, "A Long Way from the Block."
"A Long Way from the Block" features conversations with artists, activists, athletes, and other compelling individuals about their personal journeys and the influences that shaped them. From jazz musicians, coaches, to martial artists, and many others, these stories explore how passion and craft can take us to different corners of the world.
Anthony Thomas is the executive producer of "A Long Way from the Block," which gives him the opportunity to share with listeners his interest in people and the great stories of their lives. Growing up in San Diego, he came across all types of folks who had some type of influence over him. As he became older and stretched to see outside of his city limits either through conversation, books, music or traveling, he gained a different perspective on the importance of culture, art, wisdom and what it means to be “educated.”
Don’t let his age fool you: Kahlil Childs is the leader of the Kahlil Childs Quartet and a member of the Rob Thorsen Quartet, which features some of the finest professional musicians in San Diego. He specializes in alto sax and also plays soprano, tenor, and baritone saxophones, as well as bass clarinet and flute. He currently studies with Detroit legend and Grammy Award–winning musician/producer Kamau Kenyatta, and has also studied with renowned saxophonist Charles McPherson. Kahlil is a featured player in the Young Lions Jazz Conservatory under the directorship of renowned trumpeter Gilbert Castellanos.
