Join us for a night of healing, conservation, and friendship at the historic Balboa Theatre in San Diego on August 19th. "The Last Dive" is a new documentary that premiered at Tribeca Film Festival, where it won the award for best cinematography in a doc feature!
This exclusive event will feature a full night of programming including a red carpet, a special healing activation and guided meditation, a Daybreaker dance party, an exciting raffle, and panel discussion with Director Cody Sheehy, special guest Terry Kennedy, and Executive Director of Wildcoast Serge Dedina, Ph.D, Chapter Director of Sierra Club San Diego Mark West, Western Director of NRDC Joel Reynolds, Founder and President of WarFighter Scuba Nick Powers, and manta researcher Jane Vinesky.
Directed by award-winning filmmaker Cody Sheehy and produced by acclaimed Mark Monroe, "The Last Dive" is a visually stunning and emotionally resonant documentary that invites viewers to reflect on our connection to the natural world — and the wild, mysterious creatures that help us find our place in it.
Terry is a legendary figure in Baja, Mexico, an American veteran who has spent decades living on and in the water. Once a man burdened by a troubled past, Terry’s life was transformed by an unlikely friendship with Willy, a 22-foot oceanic manta ray. For nearly two decades, Willy would slap his wings against the hull of Terry’s sailboat to signal their next dive, and together they explored the ocean’s depths — an extraordinary bond that turned Terry into an unexpected conservationist.
Now in his 80s, Terry embarks on one final journey to a remote island in hopes of reuniting with his old friend. But he’s also searching for something deeper: peace, closure, and a chance to say goodbye.
Balboa Theatre
Built in 1924, the historic Balboa Theatre was an elegant vaudeville and movie palace in the heart of downtown San Diego. At the time, it was a state-of-the-art building that included six storefronts along Fourth Ave., with 34 offices on the floors above. Starting in 1986, the Balboa Theatre had been closed for over 20 years. After numerous efforts to privately renovate and reopen the Theatre, the commitment was made in 2002 to retain the historic Balboa Theatre as a public asset with the City's Redevelopment Agency funding its renovation and restoration and reopening the Theatre as a community performing arts center to be managed and operated by San Diego Theatres. The City of San Diego's Redevelopment Agency has invested over $26 million into the Balboa Theatre's renovation and restoration. This has included extensive seismic retro-fit to meet current requirements, complete replacement of all infrastructure systems including electrical, plumbing, HVAC, life safety, ADA accommodations, state-of-the-industry theatrical lighting, audio, rigging and production requirements, and audience accommodations including new seating. The project has embraced and restored the historic finishes and appearance of the Balboa Theatre while incorporating current audience and production expectations to ensure its use for generations to come. The historic Balboa Theatre reopened in January 2008 with much acclaim from audiences and performers. Additionally, it has received numerous special awards and recognition on a local, state and national professional organizations.
