VISITING ARTIST: RICHELLE SHADOAN with Avatars, Masking & Making Space for Ourselves
Join us @Revision_SanDiego La Mesa on Saturday, November 14, from 1–4 PM for an afternoon of disability-centered art, conversation, and community with artist Richelle Shadoan (@redscorpiomade).
Richelle’s ceramic sculptures explore the experience of ADHD and autistic masking through human figures with masked, tree-stump-like heads. Her work gives physical form to the ways disabled and neurodivergent people may alter, hide, or reshape parts of themselves in order to navigate a world that isn’t always built for them.
Her practice also includes full-scale wearable tree-stump masks, inviting us to think about what we put on, what we take off, what we reveal, and who we get to be when we feel safe enough to stop masking.
1–2 PM | Artist Talk
Richelle will share about her own experience with disability and how it shapes her life and artistic practice. Later, during a community activity, she’ll also guide us in thinking about our own “avatars."
2–4 PM | Community Art Activity
We’ll turn those ideas into clay finger puppets made from recycled clay. Create your own avatar: a version of yourself, a masked self, an unmasked self, a creature, a protector, or something you don’t have words for yet.
There’s no right way to represent disability, identity, or yourself. This is an opportunity to explore, play, and make alongside other members of our disability and neurodivergent community.
Come listen. Come make. Come as you are.
